Bed, Bath & Beyond to Close 6 Illinois Stores, Including 4 in Chicago Area

Bed, Bath & Beyond last month announced that by the end of the year, it will close approximately 20% of its "lower producing" stores as the chain deals with months of declining sales and a changing workforce.

On Thursday, the full list of 56 locations was announced.

Of the brick and mortar stores the retailer says it is shuttering, six of the stores are in Illinois, with four located in the Chicago area.

Mexican Independence Day Celebrations in Chicago, Suburbs Set For This Weekend

Thousands are expected to take to the streets in Chicago and at gatherings across the suburbs to celebrate Mexican Independence Day Friday and into the weekend.

The holiday, which falls on Friday, Sept. 16, celebrates Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain in 1810. In Chicago, it's often marked with a wide variety of celebrations, including fireworks and flag-waving cars driving through the city.

And while last weekend marked the official kickoff to the festivities, with the annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade in Little Village, city officials are preparing for more activities and celebrations this weekend, which often include family traditions like caravans.

Chicago Officer Involved in Anthony Alvarez Shooting Fired Shots in Another Chase 9 Days After Police Board Decision

One of the Chicago police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Anthony Alvarez in March 2021 fired his weapon during another pursuit in July, just days after a Police Board review of the first incident, according to newly released reports and videos from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

The second pursuit and shooting took place nine days after the Chicago Police Board's one-member review ruled in favor of a 20-day suspension each for Officer Evan Solano, who shot Alvarez, and Officer Sammy Encarnacion, who initiated that chase.

The Board's review was issued July 20 and sided with Supt. David Brown over COPA's recommendation for separation for Solano and a "substantial suspension up to and including Separation" for Encarnacion.

Asylum Seekers From Texas Arrive at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, Officials Say

Officials in Chicago say that at least 12 asylum-seekers arrived at O'Hare International Airport this week, with all 12 being taken to a local police station after they told officers they had no access to shelter or food.

The individuals were taken by police to the District 16 office, according to Chicago officials.

It was not immediately clear whether they were flown to Chicago as part of the ongoing effort by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to send asylum seekers and migrants to so-called "sanctuary cities" across the U.S., a group that includes Chicago, New York and Washington D.C.

Gov. Pritzker Announces Change to COVID-19 Requirements in Illinois

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker's administration on Thursday announced a change to the state's COVID mitigation strategies.

Among the new guidelines was an update to testing requirements for school and childcare employees. Unvaccinated employees in those settings will no longer be required to twice twice weekly.

The change goes into effect Friday, according to the governor's office.
