How can we keep the Reader free and accessible, for all Chicagoans?
That's one of the first questions we asked when we started thinking through how the Reader could work as a nonprofit.
It turns out the answer was right there in front of us: Already, more than 1,000 loyal readers kick in a few dollars on a regular basis to fund the Reader. If we can double that number, and then continue to scale it up, we'll be well on our way to creating a sustainable, free paper for all of Chicago.
Last month, we surveyed current members to ask them what they like most about being a Reader member, and the results were heartwarming. Overwhelmingly, people told us that just knowing they are part of keeping the Reader free for everyone was most important to them.
But we're not naïve -- we know you all love perks! So no matter what level you sign up for, you'll now get access to:
Free or discounted entry to Reader-sponsored events
An exclusive membership lapel pin
An advance PDF of each new issue
Special extras and surprises (trust us, we've got some fun tricks up our sleeves)
There's never been a more exciting time to be part of the Reader. This is the beginning of a brand-new era, and we have a chance to create something incredible -- together.
If having a community-owned, community-run alternative paper in Chicago is important to you, then you should be a member of the Reader.
The Reader is published by the Reader Institute for Community Journalism, a 501(c)3 nonprofit (EIN 84-3670420). All donations are tax deductible, to the extent allowed by law.
