| 2 dogs rescued after extra-alarm fire destroys home near Antioch Posted: 13 May 2022 05:44 PM PDT    A house was completely destroyed and firefighters rescued two dogs during an extra-alarm fire in unincorporated Antioch Friday afternoon, fire officials said. The Antioch Fire Department responded around 3:20 p.m. Friday to the 26000 block of West Halings Road in Antioch for a report of a structure fire. An Antioch fire marshal and ambulance were the first to arrive on the scene and found flames shooting through the roof of the single-story residential structure with a walk-out basement, Antioch Fire Chief Jon Cokefair said. Two dogs were reportedly inside the house and firefighters started an aggressive fire attack.  Crews switched to defensive operations when the ceiling fell into the first floor, Cokefair said. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System was activated, bringing in numerous fire departments from Illinois and Wisconsin. A total of three hose lines and an aerial master stream were deployed to bring the fire under control. Firefighters later found one dog inside the house, which was still breathing. Crews continued the search and found the second dog, which was still breathing, but appeared to have more serious injuries, Cokefair said.  Firefighters gave both dogs oxygen and they were taken to a local veterinarian by family members for treatment. The house was a total loss. No injuries to humans were reported, Cokefair said. Firefighters were challenged by the extreme heat and a lack of fire hydrants, so water tenders were used. A damage estimate and cause of the fire were not immediately available. The fire remains under investigation by the Antioch Fire Department. |
