Chicago-area pharmacies are among the first offering up doses of the new "bivalent" COVID booster shots, with more availability expected to open up this week.

CVS announced Friday, one day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its recommendation for the new vaccine, that some locations were already offering up doses of both Moderna and Pfizer's revamped booster shots. Appointments were already opened up and several continue to be available for this week.

7 Dead, at Least 41 Wounded in Chicago Shootings Over Labor Day Weekend

Nearly 50 people have been shot so far over the long Labor Day weekend in Chicago, with seven people killed in the violence and more than 40 others wounded.

The first fatal shooting of the weekend was reported in the 4400 block of West Jackson around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

According to police, a 24-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when two vehicles approached, and multiple gunmen opened fire, striking him multiple times in the back.

Some States Could Tax Biden's Student Loan Debt Relief. Is Illinois One of Them?

President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan could lift crushing debt burdens from millions of borrowers, but the tax man may demand a cut of the relief in some states.

That's because some states tax forgiven debt as income, which means borrowers who are still paying down student loans could owe taxes on as much as $10,000 or even $20,000 that was taken off their bill. In Mississippi, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas and North Carolina, forgiven student loans will be subject to state income taxes unless they change their laws to conform with a federal tax exemption for student loans, according to a tally by the Tax Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank.

That dismays Cathy Newman, a Louisiana State University graduate who just took a job teaching freshman biology at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. She figures she could end up owing a few hundred dollars of money that she could have kept had she stayed in Louisiana.

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is the latest elected official to test positive for COVID-19, leading to the cancellation of a speech she was set to deliver this week about the state's financial picture.

Mendoza made the announcement on Sunday morning that she tested positive for the virus.
