Our UPCEA professional, continuing and online (PCO) community is uniquely positioned to lead in the world’s new education landscape. That begins by creating pathways to more affordable learning experiences and alternative credentials, and expanding those opportunities is a driving force behind the creation of UPCEA’s Alternative Credentials Network. It’s clear that the need has never been greater. In May, a National Student Clearinghouse report showed that the population of adult learners with some college, no credential has soared to 39 million. In my home state of Oregon, nearly 800,000 individuals age 25 and older fit this description.

With the highest median age of any state, Maine has seen an estimated 10 percent decline over the last 10 years in its number of new high school graduates — precisely the people Richards needs. New students checking in at freshman orientation at the University of Maine get nametags are color-coded to show which state they came from among those where the university aggressively recruits. Yet UMaine has managed to increase its undergraduate enrollment during that period by about 5 percent. And the state’s community colleges, which depend on the same dwindling supply of learners, are reporting record numbers of applications for the fall.

A Majority of Higher Ed Institutions Were Hit by Ransomware Attacks - IBL News

A 64% of higher education organizations were hit by ransomware in 2021, in a jump of 44% from the previous year, according to a report from Sophos, a global cybersecurity leading firm. For issuing this report report, titled “the State of Ransomware in Education 2022”, the company surveyed 5,600 IT professionals in 31 countries, including 730 respondents from the education sector during January and February 2022.
