Hey again! I was at a picnic in the park last weekend and a singular leaf fell in the middle of the blanket, so I think fall is just on the horizon… even if it’s forecasted to be in the 80s again this weekend. But if there’s one place you can enjoy the back-and-forth temperatures of summer’s end, it’s Chicago. Here are some late-summer events — indoor and outdoor — coming up around the city you might want to know about!
First and foremost — the applications to our next Storytelling Workshop are open! Do you love audio storytelling? Want to build your skills? Apply now for the opportunity to craft your own radio story during our free, eight-week, in-person workshop! Applications are due by Monday, Sept. 19. Find out more information and apply now here or at vocalo.org/storytelling, and check out the works made by our previous workshop participants here.
Today marks the start of Latinx Heritage Month! Latinx Heritage Month is from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 this year and honors Latinx cultural history and achievement. The Field Museum is participating by hosting limited special events featuring bilingual conversation, presentations and performances from Chicago Latinx cultural groups and organizations, including Comunidad Kichwa Runa, Ballet Folklorico de Chicago and others.
Our third and final Night Out In the Parks event this year — From The Vault: A ‘90s Chicago Hip-Hop Celebration — is on Oct. 1! The second event, Reclaimed Soul: Live!, was a huge success… and, like the Summer Skate Party, sold out in advance. Come hang out with Team Vocalo for a third time this summer and enjoy live hip-hop DJ sets to celebrate the rich history of Chicago hip-hop. RSVP now here — lineup TBA!
London singer-songwriter Mahalia is performing at Lincoln Hall next week! Presented by Audiotree and excitedly welcomed by Vocalo, Mahalia returns to Chicago on Tuesday, Sept. 20 to perform a sold-out, 18+ show at Lincoln Hall in support of her 2022 EP Letter To Ur Ex. Vocalo afternoons host Nudia Hernandez got the chance to sit down with Mahalia at Lollapalooza this year to talk exes, bad tattoos and more. Check out their conversation here.
The 16th annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival returns next Saturday and Sunday! This year, the festival spans across 11 venues and features nearly 40 artists, including Jeff Parker, Samara Joy and DJ Sadie Woods. Admission to all events is free with a suggested donation of $10. Check out the full lineup and venue map on the festival website!
Grown Folks Stories is heading over to Bronzeville Winery’s courtyard tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. Created by Cara Brigandi and Eric Williams, founder and owner of The Silver Room, Grown Folks Stories is “two hours of five minute stories that range from the hilarious to the absolutely real,” a collection of real-life stories told by nonprofessional, unrehearsed storytellers. Now, she works internationally to share her story and teach creative expression to kids in need. We heard from Vélez about her work, her newest single “Victory” and more! Check out her interview below.
YOUmedia Teens Learn Audio Skills With Vocalo Collaboration
This summer, Vocalo partnered with Douglass YOUMedia to teach students the basics of audio production, storytelling and reporting skills. Community storytelling producer Ari Mejia spent four weeks with the high school YOUMedia participants to give them safe, constructive space to creatively explore the realm of audio storytelling through a series of different exercises. Nonprofit organization FORA, Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America, is looking for new volunteers to help out with kids’ weekday tutoring programs, both on Zoom and in person at their West Ridge empowerment center. New in-person volunteer tutors can apply online here and virtual tutors here. You can find more information about FORA and their tutoring programs on their website.
