Our Skate Party was a blast! Learn more about our upcoming NOITP events here...
Happy September! Don’t worry, I’m not going to make a Taylor Swift reference about August being over (even though I’m tempted). I walked by the soup restaurant in my neighborhood the other day and saw someone inside so I’m taking that as a sign the seasons’ change is just around the corner… and I, for one, am ready to break out my boots and jackets and pretend fall will last more than two weeks at most. As we get this month started, here are a few things going on the next couple of weeks you should know about!
Our second Night Out In The Parks event, Reclaimed Soul: Live! with Ayana Contreras, is already next Thursday! Enjoy an evening of vintage soul on vinyl with Reclaimed Soul: Live! at the Promontory Point Field House on Sept. 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. — hosted by Ayana Contreras and featuring a performance and conversation with special guest Meagan McNeal. You can RSVP for free online to claim your spot here. Find more info about Reclaimed Soul: Live! and our third NOITP event, From The Vault: ‘90s Chicago Hip-Hop Celebration, on our dedicated events page.
Jazzin’ at The Shedd may have ended yesterday, but starting next Thursday you can still enjoy some music and hang out with aquatic animals at the Shedd After Hours House Party. Shedd After Hours is a reserved time this September for adults 21+ to dance to house music overlooking the city skyline after the aquarium closes, plus meet some beluga whales and stingrays. Shedd After Hours: House Party will be Thursdays Sept. 8, 15 and 22 from 6 to 10 p.m., and cost of admission includes live DJs and all permanent and special aquarium exhibits and touch experiences. Find more information on the Shedd’s website!
If jazz is still more your thing, you might be interested in checking out the final installment of Hyde Park’s Jazz In The Court tomorrow! Sponsored by the University of Chicago, Jazz In The Court returned this summer after a two-year hiatus to bring free, outdoor jazz concerts to Hyde Park’s Harper Court every first Friday of the month from June to September. Tomorrow’s performance features Thaddeus Tukes Quartet from noon to 2:30 p.m. Find more information online!
Hosted by Woodlawn Diversity In Action, the Black Wall Street festival is set for Sept. 10, celebrating the diversity and resilience of Chicago’s Black innovators. The event is set to include more than 50 vendors from local Black businesses, plus food, drink, live music and dance performances, an antique car show and outdoor exhibitions highlighting the history of Chicago’s Black Wall Street. Find more information on the event and how to attend here.
And make sure to mark your calendars later this month — because London singer-songwriter Mahalia is headed to Lincoln Hall on Sept. 20. Presented by Audiotree, Vocalo proudly welcomes Mahalia back to Chicago (less than two months after we got to chat with her at Lollapalooza) on tour in support of her 2022 EP Letter To Ur Ex, with opener R&B singer Ogi. This show is 18+, and doors are scheduled to open at 7 p.m. Find more information on the show and how to attend here . Just a heads up — there’s a low ticket warning! And her meet-and-greet packages are already sold out…

Adriana Gallardo On The True Cost Of El Milagro Tortillas
Reporter Adriana Gallardo sat down with Ayana Contreras for Reclaimed Soul to discuss the lasting impact of workers’ rights violations carried out by El Milagro Tortillas — a company whose existence is a point of pride and which provides a culturally significant food staple for many in Chicago’s Latinx community. Gallardo wrote a piece for Catapult magazine this July on the subject, titled The Tortilla Type of Hurt, How One Broke My Heart.
The third episode of our “Future Folk” series, in partnership with the Old Town School of Folk Music and Music Moves Chicago, centers on the Great Black Music Class, co-taught by Angel Bat Dawid and Jaden Isiah. The goal of the Great Black Music Class is to uplift Black identities from childhood in a creative educational setting, free from the structural racism often found within predominantly white institutions. Check out the full segment (and the other three — number four was published this morning!) at the link below.

As we coast out the rest of the summer, there’s never a shortage of cyclists in Chicago.
