Chicago Sun-Times Morning Edition
Good morning, Chicago —
Here's the latest news from around the area.
Many Chicagoans found themselves scrambling yesterday when a large thunderstorm led to the city's "most significant flooding" in over two years, according to the National Weather Service. The North Side was slammed particularly hard, with some portions recording up to 5 inches of rainfall, leading to videos on social media of flooded streets and gushing water. Here's more on the most severe flooding in the area since May 2020.
All that rain didn't stop the Bears from kicking off the 2022 season with a 19-10 victory over the 49ers at Soldier Field. Sloppy field conditions at times played into their hands as San Francisco committed 12 penalties and struggled to mount a comeback once it fell behind. It was a fitting first victory for first-time head coach Matt Eberflus, whose team stuck to the disciplined principles he had been pushing all offseason, Patrick Finley writes.
And while much of the discourse around the Bally's casino coming to downtown Chicago has focused on tax revenue or concerns about its impact on neighbors, there's growing hope that the development could have benefits for those who love the riverfront. Advocates of the Chicago River and ecological preservationists spoke to WBEZ's Steve Johnson about their hopes for the casino project in River West.
