Brendan Fraser Celebrated for Comeback Role in 'The Whale'

Brendan Fraser is having a moment at the Venice International Film Festival.

The once ubiquitous movie star of "The Mummy" franchise and "George of the Jungle" had, in the last decade, backed away from the spotlight. But Fraser is charting what could be a major comeback starting with his transformative role in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," which had its world premiere Sunday night at the festival.

As the credits rolled in the Sala Grande theater, the audience gave the film a long standing ovation while Fraser, on the balcony alongside his director and co-stars, wiped tears away.

Tiffany Haddish 'Deeply' Regrets Being in Sketch at Center of Sexual Misconduct Lawsuit Against Her and Aries Spears

In an Instagram post Monday, Tiffany Haddish said she regrets having agreed to act in a sketch six years ago that is now one of the focal points of a sexual misconduct lawsuit against her and fellow comedian Aries Spears.

"I know people have a bunch of questions. I get it. I'm right there with you. Unfortunately, because there is an ongoing legal case, there's very little that I can say right now," Haddish said in the post.

Haddish and Spears have come under intense scrutiny after a woman and her younger brother accused them in a lawsuit of grooming them when they were children and coercing them into filming sexually explicit comedy sketches.

Nirvana Wins Dismissal of Lawsuit Over Naked Baby on 'Nevermind' Album Cover

In a decision Friday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by a man who appeared on the cover of the Nirvana album "Nevermind" as a naked four-month-old baby and claimed decades later that the photo constituted child pornography.

U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin said Spencer Elden, 31, waited too long to claim Nirvana sexually exploited him when the Seattle grunge rock band used an image of him swimming naked toward a dollar bill on the cover of the hit record "Nevermind," released in 1991.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against the estate of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain; Cobain's former bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic; Cobain's widow, Courtney Love; photographer Kirk Weddle; and other defendants, including several record labels.

There Are Only 4 Big Movie Releases Left This Year — Here's What's at Stake for Hollywood

The 2022 box office is a Hollywood underdog story come to life.

Despite nearly 40% less film content available in theaters compared to 2019, year-to-date ticket sales are down around 30%, according to data from Comscore.

Audiences have returned to cinemas in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and are spending more than ever on tickets and popcorn. However, the lack of steady theatrical releases will weigh heavily on the industry during the final, crucial months of the year.

Spidey Tops Box Office While Cinema Day Draws Millions

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" has swung back on top of the box office during a holiday weekend where American theaters aimed to lure moviegoers with discounted $3 tickets.

The first "National Cinema Day" nationwide promotion became the highest-attended day of the year, drawing an estimated 8.1 million moviegoers on Saturday, according to The Cinema Foundation. The one-day event – offered on more than 30,000 screens and held in more than 3,000 theaters, including major chains AMC and Regal Cinemas – collected preliminary box office returns of $24.3 million, according to data firm Comscore.

National Cinema Day was intended to flood theaters with moviegoers during a Labor Day weekend, which is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in the industry. The promotion looked to prompt people to return in the fall, inspired by a sizzle reel of the upcoming films from major studios including Disney, Lionsgate, Sony and A24.
