You know summer in Chicago is getting into the swing of things when there are too many things to do. I was getting overwhelmed just looking at the options — because, no matter what street festival you end up at, everything is a fun time. To save you a little time from sifting through the ever-growing list of fun things to do, here are a couple of festivals, fairs and other events you might want to check out over the next two weeks…
Taste of Chicago returns this year — in bite-sized celebrations! This year’s “Taste of Chicago In the Neighborhoods” starts tomorrow in the Austin neighborhood, with the following festivals next Saturday in the Pullman neighborhood and Saturday, June 25, in Little Village. All three events are free and run from 12 to 8 p.m. For more information, exact locations and lists of vendors, go here.
On June 19, the DuSable Museum and Chance The Rapper present The Juneteenth BBQ & Block Party! Join the museum for this free family-friendly celebration, including special performances, conversations, horseback riding, a quilting exhibition and more. The Eventbrite page says it’s BYOG — “Bring your own grill.” Register in advance here!
Head over to the West Loop from June 17 to 19 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Taste of Randolph Street — with more than 16 Chicago-based eateries, plus house DJ sets and performances from artists like Cautious Clay, Heavy Crownz, Derrick Carter and Channel Tres. Admission is free with a suggested donation, and all proceeds benefit the West Loop Community Organization. More information and a full lineup here!
Also next weekend, a week ahead of the annual Pride Parade, Northalsted celebrates Pride month with Pride Fest on June 18 and 19! The fest is set to take over Halsted Street with performers, drag shows and DJs across three stages, plus food, games, giveaways, a pet parade and more than 150 arts vendors. Admission is also free, with a suggested donation to help compensate performers and festival workers. Find out more information, exact location and how to attend here.
You might know Rodrigo Amarante’s music already if you’ve ever watched the Netflix show "Narcos" (his song “Tuyo,” which they used for the show’s theme, is permanently ingrained in my brain because of it), but his “caricatural, cinematic,” second solo album Drama explores a new side of his sound. Vocalo welcomes Amarante to Sleeping Village on June 23 in support of his new album, with a solo opening performance from Squirrel Flower. Show info and tickets here!
