Happy belated Summer Solstice! With the official summer season underway and temperatures looking consistently like beach weather, there are plenty of ways to enjoy all the city’s warmer months have to offer — from street fairs to parades to fireworks displays. Here are some things going on over the next couple of weeks you might want to know about!
As I’m sure many people already know, the 51st-annual Pride Parade in Northalsted is this weekend! But that’s not the only Pride event rounding out the month. Check out some of the other ways you can celebrate Pride and support Chicago’s LGBTQ community coming up…
Pride In the Park is Saturday and Sunday at Grant Park, with performances from the Chainsmokers, Alesso, Shea Couleé, Rebecca Black and more, plus a Pride Ball hosted by Legendary Kentrele Gorgeous Gucci. Tickets are for sale online.
Navy Pier Pride is all day on Saturday, with live performances from local LGBTQ artists, educational programming in the Beer Garden plus a marching band and so much more! Find the day’s full breakdown of activities here.
On Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m., TRQPITECA Queer Pride will bring Chicago's queer underground house and techno scene to Chinatown's Ping Tom Park in celebration of LGBTQ existence and resilience. This event is free, all ages and wheelchair-accessible.
Just off the Morse Red Line stop, Rogers Park’s Glenwood Arts District is home to Pride North Chicago Friday through Sunday. Admission is free and proof of vaccination is required.
Chicago Michelada Fest in Pilsen is also this weekend! From Friday through Sunday attendees can enjoy live music from more than 20 artists, local food vendors, art activities, an “adult playground” — and, of course, micheladas. So many micheladas. Check out some of the local small businesses featured at the fest, with offerings ranging from classic micheladas to more adventurous flavors and garnishes. Tickets are still available online!
The 29th African-Caribbean International Festival of Life is next weekend! Celebrate African-Caribbean culture with performances from more than 50 artists and DJs, food, games and more in Washington Park from July 2-4. A full lineup and tickets are available online now!
And, of course, don’t forget to find somewhere to sit and enjoy the city’s fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend! Navy Pier’s annual fireworks display will have two shows this year, one Saturday, July 2, and one Monday, July 4.

Lassai Amplifies Queer Voices With ‘IMMORTAL’
Originally from Chicago, New York-based multidisciplinary artist Lassai’s work is a reflection of their Black trans identity. Through sharing their perspective, they strive to uplift other Black queer and trans voices, incorporating in their music elements of R&B, house and gospel in their upcoming project IMMORTAL. We heard from them about their latest single “ur eyez” (featured on our Poised to Break Through playlist this month!) and their work de-stigmatizing Black queer and trans identities.
Through Energy Healing, Rosé Hernandez Finds Interpersonal Understanding
Rosé Hernandez a performance artist, energy healer, astrologist and herbalist, the co-leader of performance art collective Burning Orchid and the founder of energetic wellness company The Energetic Body. Through all avenues of her work, Rosé’s focus is consistently human connection. For this episode of “This Is What Chicago Sounds Like,” Rosé discusses her connection to Chicago and the intersection between her practices of performance art and energy healing.
The Community Builders at Oakley Square Apartments in East Garfield Park have partnered with Chicago Cares to support young people in the community. They’re looking for volunteers to help out at their hourlong reading and craft session on June 28, helping kids and young people with their reading and comprehension skills and assisting with a craft related to the reading materials. Healing In The Park is a summer event series in Humboldt Park promoting sharing, community healing and togetherness with an open mic, healing circle, wellness spaces and more resources. Their first event of the summer is on July 9 from noon to 5 p.m., and they’re looking for volunteers to help out. Volunteers can expect to help with setting up, manning the welcome table, art-making, food and wellness stations and more. Volunteer sign-up and more duties are available here .
The WasteShed is a nonprofit rooted in sustainability that strives to provide Chicago and Evanston residents with access to affordable repurposed arts, crafts and school supplies. Their Chicago and Evanston locations are always looking for volunteers to welcome customers and help clean and sort donations. Online sign-up is available for regular volunteer shifts at both the Chicago and Evanston locations.
