Farm machinery pulling anhydrous ammonia tank rolls over near Marengo Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:02 AM PDT Fire officials say no injuries were reported after farm machinery pulling an anhydrous ammonia tank, which can be highly hazardous, rolled over near Marengo on Monday. The Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 4:40 p.m. Monday to the area of Kishwaukee Valley Road and Oleson Road in unincorporated Marengo. Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said dispatch received a call for leaking ammonia. Fire crews arrived and located various farm machinery that had rolled over in a ditch. A damaged anhydrous ammonia tank was among the machinery that had rolled over. “Our members are familiar with the dangers of anhydrous ammonia and took immediate precautions, including securing the area and checking wind direction,” Vucha said. The damaged tank did not expel any of the product and the situation was mitigated quickly. Anhydrous ammonia is commonly used as an agricultural fertilizer. When involved in a crash or handled improperly, the product can be dangerous, Vucha said. Conserv FS, a farm supply services company, assisted at the scene by safely removing the damaged tank. No injuries were reported. Kishwaukee Valley Road was closed in both directions for over an hour. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash. ‘Unspeakable evil’: Father accused of murdering his own 3 children inside Round Lake Beach home Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:18 AM PDT A father allegedly killed his own three young children inside a home in Round Lake Beach Monday, a county board member said. The man was taken into custody after a police pursuit and crash. The Round Lake Beach Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 1:40 p.m. Monday to the 200 block of East Camden Lane in Round Lake Beach. Round Lake Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne Wilde said officers responded to a call of a well-being check at the residence. Police arrived and found three people dead inside the home. The ages of the victims were not released by the police. Lake County Board Member Dick Barr said Monday evening that the three victims were young children and they were killed by their father. “Three young and innocent souls were taken from this earth by unspeakable evil. That unspeakable evil existed in the heart and mind of the man who so heinously took the lives of three of his own children,” Barr said. “This was not a criminal act that is emblematic of who we are or where we live, rather a selfish soul, void of humanity, void of compassion, void of mental well being, who cared more about himself than he did about his own children,” Barr said. “As heart broken as I am, I am equally angry. I’m angry that this coward is not dead while his innocent children are stacked up at the morgue and his estranged wife weeps with sorrow no human alive should ever have to endure,” he added. Barr, a Round Lake Beach resident, said he started a GoFundMe account to help raise money for the mother of the children. Wilde said earlier Monday that the homicides of the victims were “an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the public.” Evidence technicians with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force responded to the crime scene to assist in the investigation. A person of interest was taken into custody around 4:45 p.m. Monday following a police pursuit and crash near Joliet, according to Round Lake Beach police and police radio traffic. The suspect vehicle was spotted by a license plate reader camera on an expressway in Chicago. Illinois State Police said troopers attempted to stop the vehicle on Interstate 57 at 115th Street in Cook County and the vehicle fled. The vehicle eventually crashed near Interstate 80 at Water Street in Joliet. The person of interest was transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not known, state police said. “This remains an active homicide investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department, therefore further details cannot be released at this time,” Wilde said earlier Monday. Police nor the Lake County Coroner’s Office have publicly identified the victims or the suspect yet. Authorities are expected to provide additional details on the case Tuesday. The incident remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department. Justin J. Pena, 37, of the 800 block of West Metzen Street in Harvard, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. A Waukegan police sergeant was in the area of the 1900 block of Grand Avenue in Waukegan around 4 p.m. Saturday. The sergeant notified dispatch that he had been involved in a vehicle crash, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip. The sergeant reported that he was unable to exit his vehicle due to its damage and that the driver of the offending vehicle was fleeing the area on foot. Officers responded and were able to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect a few blocks away, Florip said. The suspect driver of the offending vehicle was identified as Eric Alcantara, 19, of Round Lake. Investigators said that the police sergeant was traveling eastbound in the 1900 block of Grand Avenue in a fully marked 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle. A 1994 Chevrolet Camaro, believed to be driven by Alcantara, was traveling westbound in the same area on Grand Avenue. The sergeant was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. The sergeant is expected to return to work Monday. Alcantara was also transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and was released back into police custody. There were two occupants in the Camry. Neither required medical attention and it is believed all involved were wearing seatbelts. Alcantara has been charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, leaving the scene of an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle, improper traffic lane usage and failure to reduce speed. Alcantara remains held in the Lake County Jail on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 6.
