3 months in jail for man who shot BB gun at McHenry County sheriff’s deputy’s Woodstock home, patrol car

Maurice Q. Gill-McNeil, 19, of Woodstock.

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to three months in jail after taking a plea deal for firing a BB gun at a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy’s home and patrol car in Woodstock.

Maurice Q. Gill-McNeil, 19, of the 14200 block of Westwood Court in Woodstock, was indicted on three counts of threatening a public official, aggravated assault on a peace officer, reckless conduct and attempted criminal damage to government-supported property.

The Woodstock Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. on October 7 to a residence on Westwood Court in Woodstock for a report of shots fired.

Woodstock Deputy Police Chief Ray Lanz said that it was relayed to responding officers that the firearm used by the suspect appeared to be a BB gun.

Officers learned that the suspect, identified as Gill-McNeil, had fired a BB gun at the residence and the marked police car of the victim, Lanz said.

The victim was an off-duty police officer and his department-issued marked squad car was parked in his driveway, Lanz added.

Court documents show the officer is a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy.

Lanz told Lake and McHenry County Scanner in October that no specific motive for the incident had been provided or identified at that time.

Gill-McNeil was taken into custody without incident on October 8.

Court records show Gill-McNeil recently entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Gill-McNeil pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer, a Class 4 felony.

In exchange, prosecutors dismissed the rest of his charges.

McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge approved the plea deal on Friday and sentenced the man to 90 days in the McHenry County Jail.

Gill-McNeil will receive day-for-day credit, meaning he will only serve 45 days in jail.

Coppedge also sentenced Gill-McNeil to one year of conditional discharge instead of felony probation.

Jail records show the man is scheduled to be released on August 7.

A Texas man was arrested after Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Duke found over two kilograms of cocaine in a car during a traffic stop in Waukegan, police said.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Greenwood Avenue at the Amstutz Expressway in Waukegan around 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ari Briskman said the vehicle had committed a traffic violation.

During the traffic stop, Lake County Sheriff's Canine Duke conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle.

Duke indicated there was contraband inside the vehicle, Briskman said.

Sheriff's deputies conducted a search of the vehicle based on Duke's indication.

A bag was located on the floor ahead of the front passenger seat containing over two kilograms of cocaine, Briskman said.

The front seat passenger of the vehicle, Jorge Villareal-Flores, 47, of the 100 block of Eastridge Drive in Springtown, Texas, was arrested.

The Lake County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the case and approved charges of manufacturing or delivery of cocaine, a Class X felony, and possession of cocaine, a Class 1 felony.

“I am very proud of Canine Duke and his handler, Deputy Arrowood, for their efforts on this traffic stop,” Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said.

“Our canine teams, and the entire Sheriff's Office, will continue working tirelessly to seize dangerous drugs and weapons, while arresting those who possess them, to keep our communities safe,” Idleburg said.

Villareal-Flores is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $1 million bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court on July 19.
