$350,000 bond for North Chicago man caught with loaded gun while out on bond for another gun case Posted: 05 Jun 2022 12:57 PM PDT A North Chicago man, who was out on bond for possessing a machine gun, was arrested after officers found him in possession of a loaded pistol in Park City, prosecutors said. Jeremiah D. Grover, 23, of North Chicago, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, disregarding a stop sign and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelse Banks said during a bond hearing that officers observed a silver vehicle heading westbound on 7th Street in Park City last Monday. The vehicle approached an intersection and failed to stop at a stop sign. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle continued driving for about a block despite police activating their lights and sirens. The vehicle stopped at a stop sign and continued to drive for another block before turning into an apartment complex, Banks said. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with Grover, who was the driver and sole occupant. Officers smell an odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle and asked Grover to step out of the car. Grover tried grabbing some items from the vehicle as he was exiting. At that point, officers observed a small bag of cannabis in the center console. Officers searched the vehicle and recovered a loaded Advantage Arms semi-automatic pistol, Banks said. The gun, which was found in the glove box, had a plate for a serial number but it was blank. Banks said Grover has revoked a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and does not have a concealed carry license. Court records show was out of jail on a $75,000 bond for a pending case in Zion where he was charged with possession of a machine gun and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon on March 11. Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Grover held on a $250,000 bond. “[He’s] on bond for a gun charge and now he’s got a new gun charge,” Potkonjak said. On Wednesday, a judge increased Grover’s bond to $350,000. He remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $35,000 cash in order to be released. A status of preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 14. |
Group warns about multiple suspected fentanyl overdoses recently in McHenry County Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:59 AM PDT A local coalition issued a warning about multiple recent overdoses in McHenry County where the user did not realize the substance they took was laced with what authorities believe was fentanyl. The McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition issued an alert Friday morning after being notified about multiple uses of naloxone to reverse overdoses in the 24 hours prior to the alert. “While naloxone is used often in our community these uses are significant because the individuals believed they were using substances that were NOT opioids, heroin or prescription pills,” the coalition said in a statement. Laura Crain, the program coordinator for McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition, said authorities suspect the substances were laced with fentanyl but official testing has not taken place to verify. “We are assuming because the individuals were revived with Narcan,” Crain said. Most overdose deaths in McHenry County are due to fentanyl. She said that there have been many reports of people using different street substances – not believing they are using an opioid of any sort – and needing naloxone. “Officers throughout the county have found fentanyl in everything throughout this year: cannabis, cocaine, meth, faux prescription pills, etc. It is why we are staying with the messaging that if you do not purchase from a pharmacist or cannabis dispensary you should be cautious,” Crain said. Those who plan on purchasing any drug that is not from a pharmacy or cannabis dispensary should plan to have naloxone and fentanyl test strips available, the coalition said. Those who want free naloxone and fentanyl test strips can contact Arlington Heights-based organization Live4Lali by calling or texting 224-297-4393. |

Sanchez-Vargas communicated over the internet with a person who he believed to be a child, according to a criminal complaint. Sanchez-Vargas traveled to Crystal Lake on January 14 with the intent to commit a sex offense with the child, the complaint said. Former teacher charged with stealing over $13,000 in funds from education association in Marengo Posted: 04 Jun 2022 05:32 PM PDT A former teacher has been arrested and charged with stealing over $13,000 in funds from an education association in Marengo, police said. Amanda M. Oie, 26, of the 200 block of West Perry Road in Belvidere, was charged with theft over $10,000, a Class 2 felony. Marengo Police Department Sgt. Andrew Kjellgren told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the charge stemmed from a police report filed in December. Oie was a member of the Marengo Area Education Association (MAEA) and had access to accounts controlled by the association, Kjellgren said. A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges that Oie stole approximately $13,170 from MAEA. Oie used the funds for personal use, the complaint said. Kjellgren said the theft occurred from January 2020 until December 2020. The theft was discovered by other members of MAEA and a police report was made to the Marengo Police Department, Kjellgren said. A warrant was issued for Oie after she was charged on May 17. She was taken into custody by police the same day, court and police records show. Public records show Oie worked as a teacher for the Marengo-Union Elementary Consolidated District 165. District 165 Superintendent Lea Damisch said earlier this week that Oie no longer works for the district. Oie’s last day of employment was December 17. She resigned voluntarily, Damisch said. Oie was released from custody after posting 10% of a $30,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8. EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story listed the wrong name for the Marengo Area Education Association. |
57-year-old man riding on bicycle killed after being hit by pickup truck in McHenry Posted: 04 Jun 2022 04:24 PM PDT Police say a 57-year-old man died after he swerved his bicycle in front of a pickup truck, causing a collision on Route 120 in McHenry Saturday morning. The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 10:25 a.m. Saturday to the 4400 block of West Elm Street in McHenry. The bicyclist, a 57-year-old Wonder Lake man, was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say his identity is being withheld pending notification to his family. The single occupant of the Ford F-250 did not report any injuries at the scene. Walsh said there were no indications that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. The roadway was partially closed for approximately four hours. The team consists of police officers from the McHenry Police Department, Woodstock Police Department, Spring Grove Police Department, Harvard Police Department, Cary Police Department and the Johnsburg Police Department. Posted: 04 Jun 2022 03:13 PM PDT A judge on Friday sentenced a Harvard man to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a family member and injuring her, court records show. Mardoqueo Vasquez-Ortiz, 37, of the 100 block of West Front Street in Harvard, was charged with three counts of criminal sexual assault, three counts of sexual relations within families and two counts of domestic battery. A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said that Vasquez-Ortiz assaulted the victim on January 1, 2021. The complaint, filed by a Harvard Police Department detective, said that Vasquez-Ortiz committed several acts of sexual penetration on the victim. Vasquez-Ortiz threw the victim to the ground and injured her leg and wrist during the assault, the complaint said. The victim is a family member of the suspect. Officers arrested Vasquez-Ortiz in January 2021 and transported him to the McHenry County jail. McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt approved the deal and sentenced Vasquez-Ortiz to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He will receive credit for time already served in jail while awaiting his case. Vasquez-Ortiz will be required to register as a sex offender for life and pay $1,839 in court fines and fees. |

2 arrested, gun recovered after police pursuit leads to rollover crash in North Chicago Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:47 AM PDT Two men are facing charges after a car led police on a pursuit in North Chicago and the vehicle rolled over, leaving both suspects trapped inside. Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said during a bond hearing that officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired license plate registration in North Chicago on Tuesday. The vehicle, driven by Luis F. Quebrado, 30, of the 1800 block of Lincoln Avenue in North Chicago, sped away and the officers gave pursuit. The vehicle got onto Route 41 and the pursuit reached speeds in excess of 80 mph in a 45 mph zone. Katris said the fleeing vehicle started swerving and driving erratically. The car then hit a median and rolled over before coming to a rest. Quebrado along with his passenger, Brandon M. Cardona, 33, of the 1000 block of Adams Street in North Chicago, were both trapped inside the vehicle. Cardona told officers that there was a gun within his reach in the pocket of the passenger door, but officers were unable to locate it, Katris said. Officers were removing the two men from the car when they located a loaded Canik TP9 near the passenger side of the car. Cardona, who does not have a FOID card or concealed carry license, confirmed the gun belonged to him, Katris said. He also has a prior felony conviction. Quebrado told officers he had a warrant and fled because he was scared. Quebrado was charged with aggravated fleeing to elude, driving on a revoked license and reckless driving. Cardona was charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Quebrado’s bond at $200,000 and set Cardona’s bond at $350,000. Quebrado is scheduled to appear in court again on June 7. Cardona is scheduled to appear in court again on June 23. |
