Hi again! In breaking station news, there’s a mother goose who made her home on our office patio this week, so it’s officially spring! We tried to make it happen, but sadly we can’t install a camera to keep an eye on her nest because the goose and her eggs may soon be moved to another, safer location.
Let’s get into a few things you should know about this month…
First off, thanks for attending our Chi Sounds Like Showcase at Subterranean last night! We had a blast meeting and hanging out with you all. I want to give an extra special thanks to Bekoe for organizing and hosting and Nudia for keeping us moving all night long — and, of course, Brittney Carter, Oliv Blu, WemmyMo and Ausar for bringing the music. We love and appreciate you guys, and couldn’t have done it without you!
Tomorrow at 9 p.m., tune in to our sister station WBEZ 91.5 FM to hear “Mavis Staples’ Soul — A Celebration,'' highlighting the 70+ year career of Chicago’s own Mavis Staples. The hour-long special showcases her music, important role in civil rights history and some of her most important performances. And don’t forget to stick around to catch Vocalo’s own Ayana Contreras on Reclaimed Soul at 10 p.m.
Also tomorrow, the Auditorium Theatre is hosting an evening of conversation with writer and style icon Fran Lebowitz, interviewed by friend of the station Greta Johnsen of WBEZ’s Nerdette podcast. Tickets are still available on the Auditorium Theatre’s website.
The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic’s International Masters of Improvisation Workshop is hosting its final session on April 23! This virtual workshop, hosted by Melvis Santa, focuses on women in improvisation throughout 90 minutes of bilingual instruction. Tickets are available online, with discounts for students and educators and free tickets for international students.
From April 21-24, internationally-traveling The Other Art Fair will be stationed at Fulton Market! The Other Art Fair showcases 110 independent artists with thousands of pieces on display, plus interactive experiences, installations, performances and DJ sets. Tickets and more information about the fair is available online.
