Police are investigating after a man crashed and abandoned a stolen vehicle near an elementary school in Barrington Hills Monday morning.

The Barrington Hills Police Department responded at 6:50 a.m. Monday to the 200 block of County Line Road in Barrington Hills for a report of a suspicious person.

The person was described as a male, possibly Hispanic, wearing black clothes and a white baseball cap.

Officers arrived and located an abandoned vehicle in the 200 block of Steeplechase Road that had been crashed into trees, Barrington Hills Police Department Public Information Officer William Walsh said.

The vehicle was found near County Line Road and Steeplechase Road, which is near Countryside Elementary School.

The vehicle was reported stolen from a nearby police department earlier in the morning.

Police believe the suspicious person report and the abandoned stolen vehicle are related, Walsh said.

The Village of Barrington Hills initially said on Facebook that the subject may have been looking for another vehicle to steal.

An investigation led to police believing the person left the area, Walsh said.

The Barrington Hills Police Department reminds residents to lock the doors of their vehicles and to make sure all windows are completely rolled up.

If possible, residents should park their vehicles inside a garage and remove all valuables. Key or key fobs should not be kept inside the vehicle, the department says.

Residents should also check to make sure their home security systems are in working order.

Residents should call 911 immediately to report suspicious activity rather than waiting, the department added.
