McHenry man charged with strangling woman, punching her in the head while she held child

Fredi Barradas, 23, of McHenry.

Police arrested a man who allegedly strangled a woman and punched her multiple times as she held a child in her arms in McHenry on Sunday.

Fredi Barradas, 23, of the 1900 block of Sunset Avenue in McHenry, was charged with aggravated domestic battery by strangulation, domestic battery physical contact and causing a child to be endangered.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Barradas wrapped both of his hands around a woman’s throat and applied pressure, intentionally impeding her breathing on Sunday in McHenry.

Barradas, who is in a relationship with the victim, punched the woman in the back of her head four times with a closed fist while grabbing her hair, the complaint said.

The complaint also said that Barradas endangered the life of a child who was being held by the victim at the time of the attack.

Officers with the McHenry Police Department arrested the man around 11 p.m. Monday.

McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt ordered Barradas held in the McHenry County Jail on a $40,000 bond.

He would need to post $4,000 cash in order to be released.

A bond hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Woman charged with shooting man, prompting police standoff in Round Lake

Posted: 26 Apr 2022 03:35 PM PDT

Chanel McClinton, 39, of Round Lake

A woman accused of shooting a man in Round Lake on Sunday was arrested following a brief standoff that prompted the response of a SWAT team, officials said.

The Round Lake Police Department responded around 4 a.m. Sunday to a 911 wireless hang-up call in the 400 block of Haywood Drive in Round Lake.

Round Lake Police Chief David Prus said responding officers observed a 35-year-old Chicago man enter a residence with an apparent gunshot wound to his leg.

A significant amount of blood was located in a vehicle and on the driveway.

A witness reported to officers that the male victim had been shot by Chanel McClinton, 39, of the 400 block of Haywood Drive in Round Lake.

The witness said the shooting occurred in a vehicle in the driveway of the residence, Prus said.

Both subjects went into the residence and officers were notified by a friend of McClinton's that there were two juveniles in the residence.

McClinton refused commands to exit the residence and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was activated.

A level two Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) callout was also initiated for more assistance from surrounding police agencies, Prus said.

McClinton later exited the residence and peacefully surrendered as additional officers arrived on the scene.

The male victim was transported to an area hospital around 5:23 a.m. for treatment and he has since been released.

Detectives have determined the shooting was a domestic-related incident that appears to be isolated, Prus said.

McClinton was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony.

She is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $250,000 bond, jail records show. She would need to post $25,000 cash in order to be released.

McClinton is scheduled to appear in court again on May 3.

Police say a suspect shot victims with a water pellet gun in the parking lot of Walmart in Woodstock, in what officials believe is likely part of the “Orbeez Challenge” from TikTok.

The Woodstock Police Department responded Monday to a report of a battery and disorderly conduct complaint in the parking lot of Walmart, 1275 Lake Avenue in Woodstock.

Woodstock Deputy Police Chief Ray Lanz said responding officers learned the victims were shot with water pellets while in the parking lot of the business.

A further investigation led to officers learning the incident was likely part of the “Orbeez Challenge,” which was made popular on the TikTok app, Lanz said.

The prank involves people using a toy gun to shoot others with Orbeez water beads.

The water beads can cause injury to others, which is a crime, Lanz said.

The victims in the incident were not injured. The suspect nor the suspect’s vehicle was located, Lanz said.

The Woodstock Police Department issued a warning on social media that those who choose to partake in the fad can be arrested and charged.

“You will be charged appropriately if you choose to partake in this fad. Not to mention, many toy guys look too much like real guns,” the department said.

“Please, let’s avoid a potentially awful situation. Parents, please discuss this with your children,” the department added.

Last month, a Barrington High School student was charged with shooting two fellow classmates, who identify as LGBTQ+, with a pellet gun on the school campus on March 16.

One of the victims sustained a minor injury. Barrington police say the offender was participating in the “Orbeez Challenge.”

Illinois Gastroenterology Group, based in Gurnee with offices throughout the Chicago area, said they recently experienced a security breach that left their patients’ private data and financial information exposed.

Illinois Gastroenterology Group (IGG) made the announcement Friday and said they discovered unusual activity within their computer network on October 22.

IGG has offices in Gurnee, Highland Park, Lake in the Hills, Libertyville, Lindenhurst, Lake Bluff and more throughout the Chicago suburbs.

The company said they immediately launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity specialists to determine the nature and scope of the event.

In mid-November, the investigation determined that an “unauthorized actor” gained access to certain company systems, IGG said.

Information contained in those systems may have been viewed or taken by the unauthorized actor, IGG added.

Last month, the company said they determined the following personal information was exposed: name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license, passport, financial account information, payment card information, employer-assigned identification number, medical information, and biometric data.

IGG said they have not yet received any reports of fraudulent misuse of personal information impacted.

“IGG takes this incident and the security of personal information in its care seriously. IGG moved quickly to investigate and respond to this incident, assess the security of its systems, and notify potentially affected individuals. In response to this incident, IGG augmented its policies and procedures addressing network security,” the company said in its Friday statement.

“IGG accelerated the implementation of an enhanced managed Security Operations Center including the deployment of an endpoint detection and response platform in response to this event with policies enabled specially for ransomware. IGG immediately reset passwords and employees with privileged access to sensitive systems were enrolled into our multifactor authentication platform,” the statement added.

The company said they are also notifying potentially affected patients so that they may take further steps to protect their information.

Alek A. Montemayor, 28, of Harvard.

A 28-year-old man was found with drugs after he allegedly led police on a pursuit that reached 100 mph Monday evening in Harvard.

Alek A. Montemayor, 28, of the 1200 block of Orchard Lane in Harvard, was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 3 felony and Class 4 felony, and possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine, a Class 1 felony.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said police officers with the Harvard Police Department attempted to stop Montemayor, who was driving a 2017 Hyundai Accent, around 11:45 p.m. Monday near 2nd Street and McKinley Street.

Montemayor fled from officers at a high rate of speed, reaching 100 mph in a 55 mph zone in Harvard, the complaint said.

Montemayor also allegedly disobeyed multiple traffic control devices while fleeing from police, the complaint said.

Court records show the man was driving on a revoked license and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Montemayor was also allegedly not wearing a seatbelt, used an electronic device while driving and failed to use his turn signal.

Officers eventually arrested the man a short time later and found him in possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine along with a small amount of cannabis.

In addition to his felony charges, Montemayor was also issued over a dozen citations for driving on a revoked license, unlawful possession of cannabis, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding 35+ mph over the limit, disregarding a stop sign, improper turn signal, improper lane usage, using an electronic communication device, driving without a seatbelt, headlight or taillight violation and disregarding a yield sign.

McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt ordered Montemayor held in the McHenry County Jail on an $80,000 bond. He would need to post 10%, or $8,000 cash, in order to be released.

A bond hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

No injuries were reported after a train caught on fire inside a building at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union Monday morning, fire officials said.

The Union Fire Protection District and Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 10:45 a.m. Monday to the Illinois Railway Museum, 7000 Olson Road in Union, for a report of a structure fire.

Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said initial reports indicated a small fire underneath a railroad locomotive inside a repair and storage facility.

First arriving firefighters found smoke showing from the facility on the east side of the property.

A quick fire attack extinguished the fire within 10 minutes.

The locomotive was then pulled from the facility by workers which allowed firefighters to extinguish the remaining hot spots underneath the locomotive.

The diesel locomotive was undergoing restoration and it is believed grease on the underframe ignited, Vucha said.

Fire damage was minimal and did not extend to any other locomotives or the building.

No injuries were reported to museum personnel or firefighters, Vucha said.

The fire is not considered suspicious in nature.

“We want to thank the railway museum volunteers for their swift actions to help guide our fire vehicles across their property and assisting us while on scene,” Vucha said.

School officials said charges are expected as police continue to investigate a bomb threat that canceled classes Friday for students in Prairie Grove School District 46.

Prairie Grove Consolidated School District 46 Superintendent John M. Bute sent a letter to parents Thursday evening regarding the situation.

District 46 includes Praire Grove Elementary and Prairie Grove Junior High School.

Bute said a district administrator received a threat Thursday evening against the school building and all persons in the building.

The threat was an emailed bomb threat, Bute said. The email indicated a specific time and manner for an event on Friday.

The Prairie Grove Police Department and the McHenry County Sheriff's Office were notified and an investigation is ongoing.

The district canceled classes for Friday so a canine unit and multiple law enforcement agencies could search the school grounds, Bute said in an update Monday.

The search took hours and officers were able to clear the buildings and buses.

Bute said no items were found that would be considered dangerous or harmful to students and staff.

School events that were scheduled for Friday were put on hold pending the investigation.

Based on interviews conducted throughout the weekend, the threat was deemed not to be credible.

Police are continuing their investigation into the origins of the threatening email.

“We fully expect to identify and seek charges against the person or persons responsible for the threat,” Bute said.

Man charged with shoving paramedic and resisting police arrest in Crystal Lake

Luis Rodriguez, 37, of Crystal Lake

A 37-year-old man was charged after he allegedly shoved a Crystal Lake firefighter/paramedic and refused to put his hands behind his back when police attempted to arrest him in Crystal Lake on Saturday.

Luis Rodriguez, 37, of the 300 block of Kay Street in Crystal Lake, was charged with aggravated battery, a Class 2 felony, and resisting a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor.

On Saturday, Rodriguez purposely and unlawfully shoved a Crystal Lake firefighter/paramedic in the shoulder with open-palmed hands, a criminal complaint alleges.

The firefighter/paramedic was on-duty and engaging in his official duties when Rodriguez allegedly shoved him, the complaint said.

When Crystal Lake police officers attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back after being ordered to multiple times.

A judge set Rodriguez’s bond at $40,000. He would need to post 10%, or $4,000, to be released.

Rodriguez and his public defender filed a motion on Monday asking the court to grant him a personal recognizance bond or to reduce his bond, arguing he is not financially able to secure bail and that he is not a flight risk or danger to the community.

Rodriguez remains held at the McHenry County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing Wednesday morning.

State health officials issue warning to Illinois parents about severe liver damage in children

State health officials are warning parents in Illinois after cases of severe hepatitis in children have been reported in the state, including one case that required a liver transplant.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said Monday that it has learned of three suspected cases of severe hepatitis in children under 10 years of age.

Two of the cases are in suburban Chicago and one is in Western Illinois. One case resulted in a liver transplant.

The IDPH said they working to learn of other suspected cases in Illinois and are asking healthcare providers in the state to be on the lookout for symptoms and to report any suspected cases of hepatitis in children of unknown origin to local public health authorities.

The IDPH announcement follows a nationwide alert issued by the CDC in response to a cluster of nine cases of hepatitis of unknown origin in children in Alabama ranging in age from one to six years old, all of whom were previously healthy.

The CDC said that symptoms of hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain and jaundice and can be caused by viruses.

These cases appear to have an association with adenovirus 41, the IDPH said.

Adenoviruses spread from person to person and most commonly cause respiratory illness, but depending on the type can also cause other illnesses such as gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis and cystitis.

Adenovirus type 41 typically presents as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, and is often accompanied by respiratory symptoms.

While there have been case reports of hepatitis in immunocompromised children with adenovirus infection, adenovirus type 41 is not known to be a cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children, according to IDPH.

The CDC said it is working with state health departments to see if there are additional U.S. cases and what may be causing them.

The CDC also said they believe adenovirus may be the cause for the reported cases but investigators are still learning more.

The CDC is encouraging parents and caregivers to be aware of the symptoms of hepatitis and to contact their healthcare provider with any concerns.

Two veterinarians were awarded by the village board for performing CPR and saving the life of a man who was unconscious and not breathing in Lake Zurich last month.

Alex Schroth and John Hintermeister, who are both veterinarians, were honored during the Lake Zurich Village Board of Trustees last Monday.

Mayor Tom Poynton presented Schroth and Hintermeister with lifesaving awards.

Schroth and Hintermeister, who are both trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), noticed Casey Komperda in distress last month in Lake Zurich.

Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard said the two were fortunately close by and called 911.

They began performing “aggressive CPR” on Komperda after determining he did not have a pulse and was not breathing, Pilgard said.

Schroth and Hintermeister continued performing CPR until the fire department arrived and took over.

Paramedics transported Komperda to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Pilgard said that Komperda underwent angioplasty and stent work at the hospital. He was released approximately two days later.

Officials said Schroth and Hintermeister’s heroic actions contributed to the lifesaving resuscitation.

Komperda continues to undergo cardiac rehab but is doing much better.

“If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be here with my family. All the gratitude goes to them,” Komperda said.

Authorities have released the identity of a 38-year-old woman who died after being rescued from a house fire in Round Lake on Saturday. A dog also died in the fire.

An autopsy performed Monday showed Nicole Goulding, 38, of Round Lake, died as a result of smoke inhalation, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Toxicology and carbon monoxide tests are still pending, the coroner’s office said.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Police Department responded around 9:48 a.m. Saturday to the 100 block of West Providence Lane in Round Lake for a report of a structure fire.

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Joe Krueger said a neighbor called 911 after noticing dark-colored smoke coming from the roof of a residence.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in six minutes and found smoke showing from a two-story residential duplex.

A Waukegan man is being held on a $1 million bond in connection with a shooting that left another man injured in Waukegan last spring.

Jovanni Gallegos, 25, of the 1100 block of Lorraine Avenue in Waukegan, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony, and aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony.

A criminal complaint filed in Lake County Circuit Court alleges Gallegos fired a gun on May 6, 2021, in Waukegan.

4 years in prison for 1 of 4 suspects charged with selling cannabis, trafficking it into McHenry County

Posted: 24 Apr 2022 12:40 PM PDT

Alexander G. Jensen, 32, of Woodstock.

One of four suspects accused of selling marijuana and trafficking it into McHenry County from Oregon was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.

Alexander G. Jensen, 32, and Kristina M. Weyrough, 29, were arrested last year following a search warrant of their home in the 100 block of Meadow Avenue in Woodstock.

McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Judy Shammo said in a motion that the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office received information from a confidential informant on January 22, 2021.

The informant told police that Jensen and Weyrough possessed and dealt large amounts of cannabis in their residence.

Officers obtained and executed a search warrant for the couple’s residence on Meadow Avenue in Woodstock.

Officers recovered approximately 3,000 grams of cannabis throughout the home and also found $12,000 in cash, Shammo said.

Weyrough told detectives that the cannabis in the home belonged to her, while Jensen told detectives the cannabis belonged to him.

Weyrough told detectives she purchases cannabis from Oregon and has it shipped to various residences in McHenry County.

She allowed the detectives to search her cellphone and authorities found the name and address of a woman named “Maya” that Weyrough had been communicating with.

Weyrough admitted that she arranged for cannabis to be shipped to Maya’s residence in Wonder Lake.

Kristina M. Weyrough, 29, of Woodstock.

Officers responded to Maya’s residence and were given permission to enter and search.

Officers were provided a written statement from Maya indicating that Weyrough arranged the shipment of cannabis to Maya’s home and Weyrough picked it up from her, the motion said.

Detectives also found text messages on Weyrough’s phone with a subject in Oregon where she arranged the shipment of cannabis packages.

The packages were recovered and contained around five pounds of cannabis.

Weyrough was charged in January 2021 with cannabis trafficking of more than 5,000 grams, calculated criminal cannabis conspiracy and money laundering.

Jensen was charged in January 2021 with unlawful possession with intent to deliver cannabis and unlawful possession of cannabis.

Court records show a third person, identified as Elizabeth A. Weyrough, 31, of Crystal Lake, was charged in March 2021 with cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony, and calculated criminal cannabis conspiracy, a Class 3 felony.

In November, an arrest warrant was signed by a McHenry County judge for a fourth person, identified as Nicholas Kaufman, 44, of Ashland, Oregon.

Kaufman was charged with cannabis trafficking of more than 5,000 grams, a Class X felony, and criminal cannabis conspiracy, a Class 3 felony.

On Friday, McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt sentenced Jensen to 50 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The sentence came after Jensen entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Jensen pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession with intent to deliver cannabis, a Class 1 felony, in exchange for the rest of his charges being dismissed, court records show.

He will also be required to pay $4,315 in court fines and fees.

In February, Kristina Weyrough pleaded guilty to calculated criminal cannabis conspiracy and money laundering. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed her cannabis trafficking charge.

Wilbrandt approved the plea deal and sentenced her to 120 days in the McHenry County Jail and two years of probation.

The case against Elizabeth Weyrough remains ongoing. The current status of Kaufman’s case was not immediately available.

Gurnee, Waukegan men charged after man shot and killed during home invasion in Wisconsin

Posted: 24 Apr 2022 10:01 AM PDT

Jonathan M. Martinez, 25, of Gurnee.

Two brothers, one from Gurnee and the other from Waukegan, have been charged with killing a man during a home invasion in Wisconsin and then fleeing back to Lake County.

Jonathan M. Martinez, 25, of the 4000 block of Glen Flora Avenue in Gurnee, was charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and attempted armed robbery with use of force.

A second defendant, Christopher A. Martinez, 23, of the 600 block of 2nd Street in Waukegan, was also charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and attempted armed robbery with use of force.

A third defendant, Moises R. Gonzalez, 28, of Racine, Wisconsin, was charged with attempted armed robbery and possession with intent to deliver THC.

Police say the incident occurred on October 4 in the 1000 block of Monroe Avenue in Racine, Wisconsin.

Officers found a 31-year-old man, identified as James E. Hamilton, dead inside of a residence after being shot multiple times.

Officers responded to the residence after receiving a call of a possible home invasion in progress.

Christopher A. Martinez, 23, of Waukegan.

A criminal complaint filed in court said that the two Martinez brothers and Gonzalez intended to rob Hamilton, who they knew.

Officers found over $125,000 in cash, a large quantity of drugs and multiple guns inside the victim’s residence.

The complaint said that the suspects and the victim exchanged gunfire during the home invasion.

Christopher Martinez later sent a text message to Gonzalez acknowledging the robbery went bad and he had shot Hamilton, the complaint added.

Cell phone records placed the Martinez brothers directly at the victim’s home the night of the homicide.

An arrest warrant was issued for Christopher Martinez and Jonathan Martinez in early February, court records show.
