Warrant issued for driver who struck, injured police officer during pursuit in Lincolnshire

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 02:48 PM PDT

A suspect has been identified and is being sought for hitting a police officer with his vehicle, injuring her, as he fled from officers in Lincolnshire Thursday evening.

Michael J. Ockerman, 32, who has no permanent address, was charged with one count of aggravated battery of a peace officer, a Class 2 felony.

The Lincolnshire Police Department received a call from a neighboring police department regarding a reckless driver traveling northbound on Milwaukee Avenue near Aptakisic Road just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lincolnshire Police Department Commander Kimberly Covelli said dispatchers immediately received several 911 calls from people in the area reporting the vehicle was driving recklessly and blocking the roadway.

As police arrived on the scene, the suspect vehicle, driven by Ockerman, proceeded northbound on Milwaukee Avenue.

Ockerman started driving in circles on the roadway through all lanes of Milwaukee Avenue near Riverside Road.

An officer attempted to block northbound traffic on Milwaukee Avenue to keep motorists safe, Covelli said.

After exiting her squad car, she was struck by the suspect’s vehicle.

Ockerman fled from the scene at a high rate of speed and officers pursued the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.

The vehicle did not stop for the officers' emergency lights and sirens, Covelli said.

“Due to the recklessness of the driver and to avoid other innocent persons from being involved in a serious crash, officers discontinued the pursuit,” she said.

The injured officer was transported from the scene by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer was treated and released, Covelli said.

Detectives found evidence identifying Ockerman as the driver. They also obtained information showing he was last seen in Burlington, Wisconsin.

An arrest warrant was obtained Friday and a Lake County judge set bond at $350,000 on the warrant.

Ockerman is approximately 5-foot-11, 145 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information on Ockerman’s location is asked to contact the Lincolnshire Police Department at 847-883-9900.

Two women suffered serious injuries after one of them drove intoxicated and crash their vehicle, rolling it over several times near Huntley, the sheriff’s office said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Marengo Road and Howard Lane in Coral Township for a vehicle crash with injuries.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communications Specialist Emily Matusek said the crash involved a black 2009 Honda Pilot.

The Honda was traveling westbound on Marengo Road near the intersection of Howard Lane.

The vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons and crashed into a fence, Matusek said.

After crashing into the fencing, the Honda rolled over several times and sustained heavy damage.

Matusek said two women were inside the Honda.

The driver and passenger both suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries, Matusek said.

The two women were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley.

The driver, identified as Candice Felix, 33, of Cary, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and issued a notice to appear in court.

The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a warning Thursday about COVID-19 case rates that are “slowly rising in many areas of the state.”

The state health department said that Illinois residents should be “paying close attention to conditions in their local communities and staying up-to-date on their vaccination status.”

“While hospitalizations and deaths tied to COVID-19 remain stable at this time, we are seeing a slow increase in cases in many areas of the State,” said Acting IDPH Director Amaal Tokars.

“This is a reminder that we all need to remain vigilant and remain up to date on our vaccination status. This is especially important for those who are at higher risk for serious outcomes,” Tokars said.

Tokars said that vaccination is the most effective tool against COVID-19.

State health officials said that Illinois remains “strongly positioned to respond in the event of a new COVID-19 surge.”

The state stockpile of tests has been replenished, with more than 1.5 million rapid tests on hand, and half a million more are on the way.

Hospitals, schools, and long-term care facilities have been urged by the health department to take steps to increase their current testing capacity.

The state is also supporting pharmacies and healthcare providers in efforts to increase their inventories of the various FDA-authorized treatments in case of another surge.

IDPH said they are advising providers to assess their patients quickly after a COVID-19 diagnosis to determine if they are eligible for treatment.

The CDC recently authorized a second booster dose at least four months after the first booster dose for certain segments of the population.

Adults over 50 years of age and people who are immunocompromised — those with a poor ability to fight infections — over 12 years old qualify.

State health officials urged residents to get vaccinated and wear a mask if entering indoor spaces where COVID-19 infections are rising.

Those with flu-like symptoms should self-isolate and stay home from work and social gatherings, the health department said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is seeking tips from the public in locating a Wadsworth man who is wanted for possessing child pornography and is avoiding apprehension.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office Cybercrimes Unit in January conducted an investigation into the suspected sharing of child pornography, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

The investigation resulted in cybercrime detectives obtaining a search warrant for a residence in the 38000 block of North Bayonne Avenue in Wadsworth.

The search warrant was conducted on Tuesday.

Giovany S. Arias, 18, of 38000 block of North Bayonne Avenue in Wadsworth, was charged with three counts of possessing child pornography.

Detectives conducted a forensic examination of electronic devices possessed by Arias and determined he possessed numerous videos of girls under the age of 13 engaged in sexual acts with adult males.

It does not appear Arias recorded any of these videos himself, Covelli said.

Sheriff's cybercrime detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Arias on Wednesday. A Lake County judge set bond on the warrant at $350,000.

“Arias and his family are aware he is wanted, however, Arias is attempting to avoid apprehension,” Covelli said.

Additional charges are possible in the case.

Anyone who knows of the whereabouts of the man is asked to call Lake County Sheriff's Office detectives at 847-377-4413 or leave a tip on the Lake County Sheriff's app.

‘Massive crime spree’: Zion man, with help from brother, allegedly committed 60 burglaries in Illinois and Wisconsin

Posted: 14 Apr 2022 05:48 PM PDT

Markeece M. Muhammad, 23, (left) and Kwantrell C. Williams, 24, both of Zion

Police say a Zion man, with the help of his half-brother, committed approximately 60 burglaries in Lake County and bordering counties in a “massive crime spree” dating back to last summer.

In November, police served a search warrant at a residence where Kwantrell C. Williams, 24, and Markeece M. Muhammad, 23, resided in the 2300 block of Joppa Avenue in Zion.

During that warrant, officers recovered guns and drugs from the home and began an investigation, Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

On February 24, officers arrested Muhammad in the 2300 block of Joppa Avenue in Zion.

Later the same day, they learned that Williams, who was wanted on four different warrants, was staying at the Travelodge, 3633 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team assisted the Zion Police Department and Waukegan Police Department in the arrest of Williams.

The SWAT team and police officers evacuated hotel guests and staff before attempting to make contact with Williams.

Williams barricaded himself in a room at the hotel and led police on an hours-long standoff that eventually ended in Williams’ arrest.

Officers found two guns, cocaine and other evidence in the room.

Kehrli said that Williams was behind approximately 60 burglaries throughout five counties in Illinois and Wisconsin, including Lake, McHenry, Cook, DuPage, Kenosha and Racine.

In Lake County, the burglaries occurred in multiple different towns, including Zion, Grayslake, Lake Villa and Gurnee.

Williams, who allegedly began committing the crime spree in the summer of 2021, would typically case the businesses before going back at night to burglarize them, Kehrli said.

Williams would steal vehicles during the burglaries and drive them to a storage facility before later dumping them, Kehrli said.

Kehrli said that Muhammad, who is a half-brother to Williams, served as a getaway driver at times but also participated in some of the burglaries.

Williams evaded arrest numerous times before being arrested in February in Waukegan.

He was transported to the Lake County Jail at the time of his arrest and later transferred to the McHenry County Jail for charges out of Crystal Lake.

Williams is facing over 30 charges for allegedly burglarizing five businesses in Crystal Lake, stealing cars and fleeing from police in McHenry County.

On Wednesday, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance against Williams.

Muhammad was charged in February with manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

Charges relating to the burglaries are pending against the two.

Kehrli called the case a “massive crime spree” and said that it could be screened for federal charges by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Two juveniles were transported to a hospital after they crashed into a backyard of a home in Huntley and their car became fully engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon.

The Huntley Police Department and Huntley Fire Protection District responded at 2:36 p.m. Thursday to the 1200 block of Sinnett Street in Huntley for a report of a vehicle fire.

Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Mike Pierce told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that emergency crews arrived and learned a vehicle driving on Ackman Road left the roadway.

The vehicle hit a street light and landscaping and cable boxes before coming to a rest in the backyard of a home.

The car was occupied by two juveniles.

Both escaped with minor injuries and the car was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived, Pierce said.

Firefighters deployed one hose line to extinguish the fire.

Paramedics transported both juveniles to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, Pierce said.

ComEd was called to the scene to handle power outages in the area caused by the crash.

According to the ComEd outage map, less than five residents were affected and crews are working to restore power by around 11 p.m. Thursday.

The Huntley Public Works and Engineering Department was also called to assess storm drains in the area and ensure there were no hazards due to fuel leaking from the car, Pierce added.

The coroner’s office has identified a 30-year-old man who died after he was shot multiple times inside a Round Lake Beach residence Thursday morning.

An autopsy showed that Frank Robinson, 30, of Round Lake Beach, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 4:20 a.m. Thursday to the 400 block of Meadow Green Lane in Round Lake Beach for a report of shots fired.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said officers arrived at the scene and found shell casings outside of a residence.

Police officers entered the residence, which appeared to be the intended target of the shooting.

Juvenile charged with making school shooting threat towards Lake Villa schools, police say

A juvenile who allegedly made a social media post threatening a school shooting toward Lake Villa District 41 schools has been identified by investigators and is being charged.

On Wednesday, Lake Villa School District 41 sent an email to parents saying that they were aware of rumors circulating about a student “shooting up” a school that prompted the district’s schools to go on soft lockdown.

District 41 schools include Thompson School in Lake Villa, Palombi Middle School in Lake Villa, Martin Elementary School in Lake Villa and BJ Hooper Elementary in Lindenhurst.

The district said the threat was connected to the stolen car incident that occurred on Friday at Palombi Middle School in Lake Villa.

The Lake Villa Police Department said the stolen car incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. Friday.

Lake Villa Police Department Lieutenant James DeCaro told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that it was determined a 13-year-old male student gained access to a staff member’s car keys.

The student stole the staff member’s gray 2019 Kia Sorento SUV from the school’s parking lot.

The juvenile is a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) ward of the state, DeCaro said.

He is believed to have driven to the Rockford area, which is where he is originally from.

DeCaro said a follow-up investigation determined that the juvenile may have accessed a firearm while on the run.

Law enforcement and DCFS authorities in the Rockford area were notified of the incident and have been actively attempting to locate the juvenile.

Lake Villa School District 41 said in their Wednesday email that the stolen car has since been recovered.

The school district did not specify how the stolen car incident and the social media threat were connected.

The district said they worked with the Lake Villa and Lindenhurst police departments to secure their buildings and investigate the credibility of the social media threat.

Police were at the district’s four school buildings during student arrival Wednesday morning and increased patrols are taking place Thursday.

The Lake Villa Police Department said in a statement they were aware of a “widely circulated Instagram post” that made reference to the safety of the schools.

“We are investigating the post, which does not appear credible. We take these threats seriously and as a precaution, we have an extra police presence at our schools,” the police department said.

All buildings were placed on a soft lockdown district-wide as a precautionary measure.

During a soft lockdown, the perimeter is secured and exterior doors and windows are locked. Students may move freely throughout the school.

In an update Wednesday evening, the Lake Villa Police Department said investigators identified the person responsible for the transmission of the social media threat.

Charges were being filed against the juvenile offender through the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Our police department takes all threats serious and offenders will be charged to the fullest extent. As we indicated earlier, this was not a credible post. We appreciate the partnership with our school administration and we are committed to keeping our schools and community safe,” the police department said.

DeCaro said the student being charged for the Instagram post is not the same student who is wanted for stealing the staff member’s car from Palombi Middle School last week.

The two students have no connection to each other, he added.

School resumed as normal Thursday morning, the district said in an updated statement.
