A busy section of Route 59 in Barrington will be closed in both directions for nearly a week starting this coming weekend so crews can repair a railroad crossing.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced the closure will take place on Route 59, also known as Hough Street, north of James Street.

IDOT said repairs to the Canadian National Railroad crossing will require a full closure of the southbound and northbound lanes.

Route 59 will be closed at James Street and just south of the entrance to Heinen’s Grocery Store during the project.

The closure will go into effect at 9 a.m. Saturday.

A detour will direct motorists to County Line Road, Hart Road and Northwest Highway (Route 14).

The work is expected to be completed, weather permitting, by 6 p.m. on April 29.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area, IDOT said.

“Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment,” IDOT said.

Ingleside man held on $500K bond for ‘serious’ attack on 3 people, including 2 elderly victims

Daniel J. Winkles, 28, of Ingleside.

A man was ordered held on a $500,000 bond after he allegedly attacked three people, including two elderly victims, at a home in Ingleside while armed with a knife.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:30 a.m. Sunday to the 36400 block of North Fairfield Road in Ingleside for a report of an open 911 line.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said an open line means someone called 911 but nobody was talking to dispatchers.

Dispatchers could hear a physical fight in the background and a woman saying “you choked me out Danny” before the 911 call was disconnected, Covelli said.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene and learned Daniel J. Winkles, 28, who lives at the residence, seriously battered three relatives before deputies arrived.

Sheriff's deputies learned Winkles repeatedly struck a 29-year-old woman, who he is in a dating relationship with, numerous times, Covelli said.

He allegedly pulled the woman by the hair and attempted to strangle her.

The woman was able to avoid being strangled by her neck but Winkles was able to cover her nose and mouth with his hands until the woman almost lost consciousness, Covelli said.

The woman was able to run out of the home to avoid being attacked further.

Winkles turned his attention to a 68-year-old woman in the home and allegedly battered the woman and strangled her by her neck.

A 72-year-old man attempted to intervene and stop Winkles from attacking the 68-year-old woman.

Winkles took the man's cane and struck the man with the cane and cut him with a knife, Covelli said.

Winkles was “completely non-compliant” when sheriff’s deputies arrived.

The 68-year-old woman told deputies that Winkles had a knife in his pocket.

Covelli said that sheriff's deputies told Winkles not to reach for the knife but he put his hand in his pocket in a “likely attempt” to pull the knife on the sheriff's deputies.

“Due to being in very close proximity to Winkles in the home, sheriff's deputies were forced to charge Winkles and wrestle him to the ground. Winkles resisted sheriff's deputies but was eventually placed into custody and the knife was recovered from his pocket,” Covelli said.

Winkles was arrested and the Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved charges of aggravated domestic battery involving strangulation, aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated battery with a victim over 60, aggravated battery involving strangulation, six counts of aggravated domestic battery, resisting a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer.

A Lake County judge on Monday ordered Winkles held in the Lake County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Winkles was on parole by the Illinois Department of Corrections and a violation warrant has been issued.

If Winkles posts bond on the new charges, he will be transferred back to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, Covelli said.

He is scheduled to appear in court on May 12.
