OPINION: As students return to campus, higher ed must build on what we learned during the pandemic - John C. Mitchell, Hechinger Report

What I found heartened me: During the pandemic, leaders and support teams built new relationships, compared notes with others across the country and developed new partnerships within their campuses. Centers for teaching and learning worked with IT support in new ways to help instructors move courses online. Decision-makers and implementors moved quickly. All this gave me hope that new alliances and new ways of working will help U.S. higher education shake off decades of paralysis and begin boldly solving problems in new ways.

This bipartisan bill would create $50M federal grants for regional public universities - Rick Seltzer, Higher Ed Dive

Four-year regional public universities in distressed areas could receive federal grants of up to $50 million for economic and community development efforts under newly introduced bipartisan legislation. The grants would go to institutions for projects to address healthcare challenges, seed early stage businesses, modernize broadband networks and improve critical infrastructure. As many as 174 institutions across the country would qualify under the proposal. Rep. Jim Costa, a California Democrat, promoted the legislation at a press conference Tuesday at Fresno State University. The bill is cosponsored by Rep. Bruce Westerman, an Arizona Republican.

Student Views on Affordability and the Value of College - Susan Fourtané, Fierce Education

The results of the college affordability survey show that 68 percent of college students say they or their families struggle to pay for their education. Almost half of the students polled, or 46 percent, said tuition has been the biggest pain point followed by technology, books and course materials, and housing. The survey revealed that the majority of college students are solely paying for their education, with a higher percentage of two-year students paying their own way. Nearly half of the students polled, 46 percent, said they are left with $250 or less after paying for education costs each month. Fourteen percent of students have only $100 or less left each month after paying expenses.
