New COVID Boosters Are Now Available in the Chicago Area. Here's Who Experts Say Should Get The Shot

The long-awaited COVID booster shots that specifically target the highly contagious BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants have arrived at pharmacies in the Chicago area, with more doses on the way and headed to doctors offices and health clinics across Chicago and Illinois.

According to a Friday announcement from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the state expects to receive 580,000 doses of the new booster. And that's in addition to the 150,000 doses Chicago is primed to receive, IDPH said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday cleared the reformulated COVID shots following a nearly seven-hour meeting and a 13-1 vote by the agency's independent committee on vaccines. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signed off on the shots a few hours later.

Chicago Sees Violent Labor Day Weekend With More Than 50 People Shot Across the City

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown is scheduled to provide a public safety update at 9 a.m. Tuesday after more than 50 people were shot across the city of Chicago over the Labor Day weekend.

"I don't remember seeing a Labor Day weekend with so few people out on the street," said Father Michael Pfleger, the pastor in a neighborhood that this weekend saw several young people injured by gun violence, including an 18-year-old who was fatally shot.

"The fear element is so real and so horrible that our children are locked into houses."

Lake View Residents on Edge After Brazen Robberies, Including One Captured on Camera

Lake View residents are banding together to take action after several high-profile robberies that have occurred in the neighborhood, including one that was captured on surveillance footage on Sunday afternoon.

Neighbors were largely in their homes at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday when they heard the victim in the theft screaming, with one saying that she saw a Ring video of the woman being robbed at gunpoint.

"It's terrifying! It's the middle of the day and they attacked her," Megan Hasse said.

Activists Left to Mourn, Search for Solutions as More Than 50 Shot Across Chicago This Weekend

More than 50 people were shot across the city of Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, and as families mourn the victims of those shootings, others are also feeling the heartache that gun violence has wrought.

One such shooting occurred in the 8600 block of South Kingston at approximately 6:47 p.m. Sunday. In that incident, at least four people were, and two young men were killed in a hail of gunfire.

Their story is all too familiar to Pastor Tom Kennington of the South Chicago Christian Center, who knew the victims.

Man With Ax Shot and Killed By Security Guard Outside Chicago Weed Dispensary: Police

A man wielding an ax was shot and killed by a security guard outside of a weed dispensary in Chicago on Labor Day, authorities said.

Police said the incident happened just after 10 a.m. in the 200 block of South Halsted, when a man got into a verbal altercation outside of a business with a 37-year-old man working security.

The man ultimately began swinging an ax at the security guard before striking him in the leg.
