Good morning, Chicago —
Here's the latest news from around the area ahead of the weekend.
The boyfriend of an unidentified Cook County sheriff's deputy and his sister have been indicted by a federal grand jury on drug charges, officials announced yesterday. Sean M. Dwyer, 51, and his sister Bridgett Massey, 35, are charged with conspiracy and possession of cocaine. Dwyer was living with the sheriff's deputy, who was placed on administrative leave and isn't facing charges. Frank Main has more on the case here.
In other news, two Chicago police officers will face charges later today in connection with a shooting this summer in Pilsen that left two people wounded, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx said yesterday. Security video showed one of the officers, who were wearing plainclothes, fired first from an unmarked car at a group standing on West 18th Street, which led to someone from the group firing back. Here's more on the charges Foxx plans to file against the two cops.
And private booters roaming free in more than half of Chicago's 50 wards could soon get the go-ahead to take their controversial, car-disabling operations citywide. Approval by a City Council committee sets the stage for a full vote that'd allow merchants across the city to hire private companies to patrol lots and boot vehicles using spaces reserved for those businesses. Currently, it's an opt-in system in which roughly half of the city's wards allow the booters. Read Fran Spielman's full story here.
