Stream our festival interviews from artists like Amber Mark and Sampa the Great!
Don’t freak out — but it’s August now. I know it might seem like the summer is almost at its end when you look at the calendar, especially with some of the major festivals behind us, but don’t worry! Summertime Chi events are far from over. Here’s what’s coming up this month we think you need to have on your radar…
Our third Chi Sounds Like Showcase is tonight at the Subterranean! Who says we can’t have fun on weekdays? Come out to the historic Wicker Park venue to support the sounds of our city, featuring Chi artists Joel Q, Heavy Crownz, nombreKARI and Christian JaLon, plus Vocalo afternoons host Nudia Hernandez DJing throughout the night — all hosted by Bekoe. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are still available online at subt.net. Learn more about the artists scheduled to perform and stream their most recent interviews here!
Vinyl and Vittles is an outdoor record fair and food market collective hosted at the Englewood Village Plaza on select Sundays every month through October. This Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., their August edition is celebrating women owned businesses and female entrepreneurs with local food and record vendors, plus a lineup of DJs featuring Vocalo production director Ayana Contreras, host of Reclaimed Soul. Admission is free, but you can RSVP online and check out more information here.
Vocalo is a media sponsor of Ruido Fest, Chicago’s Latin alternative music festival, which returns to Union Park Aug. 19 through 21! Throughout the weekend, festival goers can enjoy music from Cuco, Carla Morrison, Cypress Hill, Mila La Morena, George Arthur Calendar and so many more. Single day and three-day tickets, plus the full lineup, are available online.
We’re working with the Chicago Parks District this year to present three community-focused Night Out in the Parks events, the first of which is the return of our Summer Skate Party on Aug. 26 at McKinley Park. After a two-year break, we’re excited to turn the park’s seasonal ice rink into a roller rink and skate the evening away to DJ sets by DJs Dreea and All The Way Kay ! All our Night Out in the Parks events are free, but you can RSVP in advance online here. Find more information on our dedicated NOITP events page.
And don’t forget — our friends at our sister station WBEZ have a list of even more fun events to check out this summer… and did I mention they’re all free? Check out their free Chicago event guide below!

KAINA At Pitchfork 2022: “The Details Are Where It Matters…”
Back when we were getting rained on at Pitchfork Music Festival, on-air host Nudia Hernandez got the chance to catch up with Chicago’s very own KAINA on the first day of the festival. KAINA broke down her time at SXSW, her NPR Tiny Desk concert, uplifting other artists in the Chicago music scene and how she found inspiration during lockdown. Check out their conversation below...

Make sure to take in all the Chicago summer has to offer while we still can — and keep your fingers crossed the weather continues to stay below the 90s!
