Officials have released statements recognizing first responders and offering words of unity and support after the Highland Park mass shooting.

Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said in a statement Saturday morning that he was attending the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.

He recognized the heroic actions first responders and the community took when gunfire erupted near Second Street and Central Avenue Monday morning.

“[…] when the shooting started, I saw police officers, firefighters, paramedics run toward the gunshots, and we were incredibly fortunate that day to have such professional heroes by our side. I saw everyday members of the community jump into action and aid the wounded. We have an amazing medical community of individuals who bravely hurried toward the wounded and rushed to medical facilities for further assistance,” Idleburg said.

“Without the help from our medical professionals, the outcome may have been much worse. Words cannot even begin to describe all the heroic actions taken place on July 4th as well as the days that came and continue to come afterward.”

Police said that Robert E. Crimo III, 21, of Highwood, was responsible for the shooting.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that Crimo pre-planned the attack for several weeks and he allegedly brought a high-powered rifle to the parade.

Crimo allegedly used a fire escape ladder to access the roof of a building on the parade route where he opened fire on parade-goers, killing seven people and injuring over 45 people. Over 80 rounds were fired from the rifle.

Crimo, who was dressed as a woman, exited the roof, dropped the rifle and escaped with the fleeing crowd before borrowing her mother’s silver 2010 Honda Fit, according to Covelli.

Idleburg called Crimo a “calculated coward” and hopes he “never sees the outside of a prison cell for the rest of his life.”

“As a society, so many have become numb to mass shootings as we read about them nearly every day. Then, on Independence Day, when our families, our children, our friends, were gathered along parade routes to celebrate this nation's independence a calculated coward unleashed unprecedented terror on our community with a weapon of war,” Idleburg said.

“I truly hope this is the last mass shooting we live through before assault-style rifles are banned. Assault-style rifles are nothing more than killing machines, and they have no place in a civilized society. It is time action is taken. While the intent of my message is not meant to be political, I feel the most significant action that can be taken to minimize and prevent further carnage is by enacting a full ban on assault-style rifles.”

“To the City of Highland Park and all of those impacted by this senseless terror – we will be with you as you heal. We are with you forever. You are Highland Park Strong,” Idleburg added.

City officials also released a statement Saturday afternoon.

They thanked their government partners who provided support during and after the shooting.

“As a City, we have experienced a profound sense of gratitude for all those who have come together to support us, from artists creating inspiring chalk art to musicians writing songs, neighbors organizing meal trains and advocates planning vigils to businesses from Highland Park and beyond donating food and strangers lending a shoulder to cry on,” the statement said.

Idleburg and city officials reminded the community that support is available for survivors.

A family assistance center opened Wednesday at the Highland Park High School, 433 Vine Avenue.

The FBI's Victim Service Response Team is working in conjunction with local, state, and federal aid groups to staff the center.

Services provided at the center include counseling, government aid assistance and financial assistance.

City of Highland Park Communications Manager Amanda Civitello said Saturday evening that the family assistance center will be extended.

It will close on Sunday to give volunteers a day to process, rest and prepare for next week.

“Together, we will travel the difficult path of healing, honor the memory of those who were killed, and extend each other grace and empathy as we navigate this unchartered territory. Together, we are Highland Park Strong,” city officials said.

Crimo was arrested Monday evening after a person spotted the wanted Honda Fit as it traveled southbound on Route 41 in North Chicago.

A short pursuit ensued and it came to an end at Route 41 and Westleigh Road in Lake Forest.

Crimo was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder Tuesday evening, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said.

Many additional charges will be filed against him, Rinehart said.

Covelli said there are no indications anyone else was involved in the Monday shooting.

Crimo confessed to the attack and told investigators that he had contemplated committing a second attack in Wisconsin.

He remains held in the Lake County Jail after Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered him held without bond Wednesday morning.

A 66-year-old Tennessee man died at the hospital after his car was rear-ended by another man, who was seriously injured, in Gurnee Saturday morning.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded at 5:39 a.m. Saturday to Stearns School Road and Dilleys Road in Gurnee for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived and found a 2017 Cadillac XTS and a 2013 Mazda CX5 with extensive damage, Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said.

The preliminary investigation showed the Mazda was driven by a 66-year-old man and occupied by a 64-year-old woman, both from Crossville, Tennessee.

The Mazda was traveling eastbound on Stearns School Road when the Cadillac, driven by a 36-year-old North Chicago man, rear-ended it, Gaylor said.

Paramedics transported the 66-year-old man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he died.

The 64-year-old passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Gaylor said.

The 36-year-old man driving the Cadillac sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was requested to assist in the crash investigation, Gaylor said.

The intersection was closed for around four hours while investigators worked the scene.

An autopsy by the Lake County Coroner’s Office will be scheduled, Gaylor added.

The crash remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department.

A 41-year-old man and his girlfriend were both arrested after they allegedly hit and injured a 16-year-old with a hammer and coffee pot at a Zion home.

Jeremy Rushing, 41, of Zion, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of domestic battery.

Cynthia McClanahan was charged with aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery.

The Zion Police Department responded to a residence Monday for a complaint of a broken window.

Rushing is the father of the victim, who is 16 years old, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said during a bond hearing Tuesday morning.

The 16-year-old told officers his father locked him out, so he broke a window to get in, Katris said.

Rushing’s girlfriend, McClanahan, then came into a room and allegedly started hitting the 16-year-old.

The 16-year-old stated that Rushing allegedly hit him with a hammer, Katris said.

Officers found the victim bleeding from his head, face and hand knuckles.

They observed a trail of blood in the bathroom and a welt was found on the teen’s forearm.

Prosecutors said Rushing’s girlfriend hit the 16-year-old with a coffee pot.

The coffee pot was found broken at the scene.

Rushing admitted to police he had an orange hammer, but it was not recovered at the scene, Katris said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was notified.

McClanahan told officers she was hit in the face, but officers observed no injury at the scene, Katris said.

The 16-year-old suffered lacerations to his face, which did not need stitches, but the lacerations to his left arm did need stitches, Katris said.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Rushing’s bond at $35,000. He remains held at the Lake County Jail.

McClanahan’s bond was set at $10,000. She posted bail and was released on Friday, court records show.

Both Rushing and McClanahan are scheduled to appear in court on August 3 for preliminary hearings.

A 53-year-old Lake Villa man was arrested for allegedly punching two nurses after a disagreement regarding the care of a family member physically escalated at a rehabilitation center in Long Grove Sunday morning.

Vitaliy Sergiyenko, 53, of Lake Villa, was charged with aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, and battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:40 a.m. Sunday to Avantara Long Grove, 1666 Checker Road in Long Grove, for a report of a staff member who was battered, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Ari Briskman said.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said during a bond hearing Tuesday that Sergiyenko was visiting his mother and father at the rehabilitation center.

Sergiyenko’s father told his son that a nurse injured his hand, Katris said.

Sergiyenko’s lawyer said at the hearing that his client tried to discuss the issue with the nurse when the disagreement escalated into a physical scuffle.

Sergiyenko then allegedly punched the nurse in the face. Another nurse observed the battery and went to break up the altercation when Sergiyenko also allegedly punched that nurse in the head, Katris said.

During the altercation, Briskman said Sergiyenko allegedly placed one of the staff members into a headlock and struck them with his fist.

Deputies arrested Sergiyenko at the scene and transported him to the Lake County Jail, Briskman said.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Sergiyenko’s bond at $35,000. He was posted bailed on Friday and was released.

Sergiyenko is scheduled to appear in court on August 16 for a preliminary hearing.

Round Lake man allegedly threatened shooting ‘like the mass shooting that just happened’ towards social security office in Waukegan

Juan Diaz of Round Lake | Provided Photo

A Round Lake man was arrested after he threatened to commit a shooting at the Waukegan social security office “like the mass shooting that just happened” when his benefits claim was denied, prosecutors said during a bond hearing.

Juan Diaz of Round Lake was charged with one count of harassment through electronic communications.

Diaz made a claim for social security benefits, which was denied, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lindsay Hicks said during a bond hearing Thursday morning.

Diaz, upset with the denial, called the social security case manager and stated, “I’m going to come down there and shoot them all like the mass shooting that just happened,” Hicks said.

Round Lake police officers responded to Diaz’s residence and asked him if he had any weapons.

Diaz indicated “he was not going to give them up.” Diaz does have a valid FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card, Hicks said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday and Diaz was arrested by the Waukegan Police Department, court records show.

Assistant Public Defender Joseph Steinfels said Diaz has been on social security dealing with health issues for over four years and asked the judge for a recognizance or low cash bond.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Diaz’s bond at $100,000, meaning he would have to post 10%, or $10,000, to be released.

Bail was posted for Diaz and he was released on Friday, court records show.

Potkonjak ordered him to not have any contact with the social security office located at 1930 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan and with Congressman Brad Schneider’s office.

Potkonjak also ordered Diaz to surrender his FOID card and all his firearms.

Diaz is scheduled to appear in court on August 3 for a preliminary hearing.

The 8-year-old boy who was shot and paralyzed after the Highland Park parade is now conscious and his condition has improved, a spokesperson said Friday. He has been asking to see his twin brother and his dog.

A spokesperson for the Roberts family said Cooper Roberts, 8, is now in serious condition, according to ABC7 Chicago. He was previously in critical condition.

Cooper is conscious for the first time since the shooting and he was removed from a ventilator, ABC7 reported.

He asked to see his twin brother, Luke, who suffered shrapnel injuries from the incident, and his dog.

Dr. Keely Roberts, the superintendent for Zion Elementary School District 6, was attending the Highland Park parade on Monday with her two twin sons, Cooper and Luke.

Keely and Cooper were both shot at around 10:14 a.m. near Second Street and Central Avenue.

GoFundMe account organized by friends of the Roberts family said Keely Roberts was seriously injured but will recover.

Cooper was shot in the chest and his spinal cord was severed.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago where he underwent several surgeries.

Tony Loizzi, a friend and colleague of Keely Roberts, said Luke is recovering at home with his sisters.

Keely underwent several surgeries after she received gunshot wounds to her leg and foot area. She was later discharged from the hospital.

"Quite frankly, she probably should not have been discharged but, she insisted on it so that she could be at her son's side, Cooper, who is at a hospital in the city with her husband," Loizzi said.

Doctors were able to finally close up Cooper's belly Wednesday evening, Loizzi said.

A family spokesperson told the media Thursday that Cooper is paralyzed from the waist down.

Active and retired superintendents across the state have reached out to the school district to help while the family recovers, Loizzi said.

Loizzi said Keely "works hard day and night" for her school district.

Over 13,000 donors raised over $800,000 for the Roberts family as of Friday afternoon.

Police said that Robert E. Crimo III, 21, of Highwood, was responsible for the shooting.

He was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder Tuesday evening, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said.

Many additional charges will be filed against Crimo, Rinehart said.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that Crimo pre-planned the attack for several weeks.

Crimo allegedly brought a high-powered rifle to the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.

Covelli said that Crimo used a fire escape ladder to access the roof of a building on the parade route.

Crimo then allegedly opened fire on parade-goers, killing seven people and injuring over 45 people. Over 80 rounds were fired from the rifle.

Crimo, who was dressed as a woman, exited the roof, dropped the rifle and escaped with the fleeing crowd, according to Covelli.

Crimo walked to his mother's Highland Park home, which is nearby the parade route, and borrowed her silver 2010 Honda Fit, Covelli said.

A person spotted the wanted Honda Fit as it traveled southbound on Route 41 in North Chicago around 6:30 p.m. Monday as an intense manhunt was underway.

The person called 911 and a North Chicago police officer who was sitting at Route 41 and Buckley Road in North Chicago spotted Crimo drive past in the vehicle, Covelli and Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said.

A short pursuit ensued and it came to an end at Route 41 and Westleigh Road in Lake Forest.

Officers arrested Crimo and located a second rifle in his vehicle. The two rifles along with three other guns seized were legally purchased by Crimo himself.

Covelli said in a follow-up press conference that law enforcement had two prior encounters with Crimo.

One of those occurred in April 2019 when Highland Park police responded to a delayed report from a family member that Crimo attempted suicide.

Officers spoke to Crimo and his parents and determined the matter was being handled by mental health professionals, Covelli said.

The second encounter was in September 2019 when a family member reported Crimo threatened to "kill everyone."

Police responded and removed 16 knives and other weapons from his residence. They then notified the Illinois State Police but officers did not arrest Crimo.

9 years in prison for Rockford man convicted of drug-induced homicide in death of man at Wonder Lake home

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 08:52 AM PDT

Eric Williams, 42, of Rockford

A judge sentenced a 42-year-old Rockford man to nine years in prison after he sold heroin and cocaine to a man who died when he ingested the drugs at a Wonder Lake home.

Eric Williams, 42, of the 5900 block of Garrett Lane in Rockford, was indicted and charged with three counts of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.

Williams unlawfully delivered heroin and cocaine to Steffen Darnick, 31, of Belvidere, in Rockford on December 22, 2019, a grand jury indictment said.

Darnick's mother told McHenry County sheriff's detectives that Darnick was staying with her family in Wonder Lake after returning home from a drug rehabilitation facility, court documents said.

Darnick's mother drove her son to Rockford on December 22, 2019, because he told her he had to pay a debt off to a drug dealer to protect his family.

The two arrived at a large parking lot. Darnick received a phone call and left his mother's vehicle before returning ten minutes later, court documents said.

Darnick ingested the drugs two days later and died at his parents' home in Wonder Lake.

Small bags containing powder residue were found alongside his body and toxicology results show he consumed heroin and cocaine before he died.

Detectives were able to recover text messages from Darnick's phone, court documents said.

Darnick had been exchanging messages with a contact named "Eee."

Detectives determined that Darnick ordered the drugs from "Eee" and bought them when his mother took him to Rockford.

On January 7, 2020, detectives went to Rockford and sent text messages to "Eee" from Darnick's phone in an attempted drug deal bust.

Detectives were able to set up a drug deal with "Eee," who believed he was going to meet with Darnick.

Detectives ordered "150 n 150," which is the same order Darnick made to "Eee," and they agreed to meet in the same parking lot.

However, "Eee" became suspicious and attempted to flee the scene, court documents said.

Police arrested the man, who they identified as Williams.

Williams was transported to the Winnebago County Jail on charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage to state-supported property and aggravated fleeing to elude.

McHenry County sheriff's deputies later transported Williams to the McHenry County Jail in June 2020.

A jury trial began in April and Williams was found guilty of one count of drug-induced homicide.

The two other counts were dismissed by prosecutors.

McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrant sentenced Williams to nine years in state prison.

He must serve at least 75% of his sentence under the Illinois truth in sentencing guidelines.

He will receive credit for 504 days served in jail.

A motion filed by Williams’ attorney in May asked Wilbrant for a new trial, alleging that “the verdict is the result of passion, bias, and prejudice on the part of the jury against the Defendant.”

The motion was later denied.

Wilbrant ordered Williams to pay over $5,283 in court fees and fines.

“While law enforcement and the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office have effectively stamped out local drug distribution over the last several years, users can still access drugs in places like Rockford, Milwaukee, and Chicago,” McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally said.

“If places like Chicago are not going to vigorously enforce their drug laws, we will. The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office has charged nearly 80 drug-induced homicide cases since 2017, compared with 12 in Kane County, 9 in Lake County, and 15 in Cook County,” Kenneally added.

A judge sentenced a 26-year-old man to 10 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend and setting his home on fire near McHenry in December.

Alexander Campos, 26, of McHenry, pleaded guilty Wednesday to residential arson, a Class 1 felony and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded in December to the 500 block of Sunrise Drive in unincorporated McHenry.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said at the time a 25-year-old woman reported she had been battered and stabbed by her boyfriend, identified as Campos.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As deputies were taking Campos into custody at his residence on Sunrise Drive, which is where the stabbing occurred, his residence was discovered to be on fire, the sheriff’s office said.

Firefighters arrived in under six minutes and found a split-level home with flames coming out the front door and windows.

The damage to the structure was substantial and the home was deemed uninhabitable.

A grand jury indicted Campos on charges of attempted first-degree murder, residential arson, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and four counts of domestic battery.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Campos took a “substantial step” toward the commission of first-degree murder when he stabbed the victim in the chest area with a knife.

Campos, who was previously convicted of domestic battery in a 2015 Lake County case, pushed the victim onto a bed and held her there while holding a knife to her body, an indictment said.

Prosecutors arranged a plea deal with Campos and he pleaded guilty to the two charges in exchange for all other charges, including the attempted murder charge, being dismissed.

McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge sentenced Campos to 10 years in state prison on Wednesday.

Campos will also receive 208 days of credit for staying in the McHenry County Jail since the December incident.

Upon his release, Campos will also serve a two-year term of felony probation for pleading guilty to domestic battery in a separate case where he attacked a family member and spat on a police officer in November, court documents show.

Coppedge ordered Campos to pay over $1,200 in court fees and fines and register as an arsonist upon release.
