64-year-old woman and longtime nurse identified as victim killed in bicycle crash in Green Oaks Posted: 15 Jul 2022 09:03 AM PDT A 64-year-old woman, who was a nurse for almost 40 years, has been identified as the victim killed when she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle in Green Oaks. The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday near St. Mary’s Road and Terre Drive in Green Oaks. The Lake County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call for a vehicle versus bicycle crash with injuries. Deputies arrived and found a 64-year-old Green Oaks woman with significant injuries, according to Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli. Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the woman was identified as Nancy Nozicka. The preliminary investigation showed an 81-year-old Libertyville man was driving a 2005 Toyota 4Runner southbound on St. Marys Road approaching Terre Drive. Nozicka, who was on her bicycle, attempted to cross St. Marys Road from the west side of Terre Drive. Nozicka traveled directly in front of the Toyota, Covelli said. The 81-year-old man was unable to stop in time and hit the woman. Paramedics transported Nozicka to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. Nozicka was later pronounced dead. The man driving the Toyota was not injured. According to her obituary, Nozicka leaves behind her husband and four children. She led a 38-year career as a nurse at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital and later became the hospital’s first heart failure coordinator, the obituary said. A wake will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday with a funeral service at 6 p.m. at McMurrough Funeral Home in Libertyville. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Libertyville. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. Juvenile arrested after shootout in Zion neighborhood leaves 19-year-old man hospitalized Posted: 15 Jul 2022 07:00 AM PDT A 19-year-old man was shot and hospitalized and a juvenile was arrested after a shootout on a residential street in Zion Wednesday evening, police said. The Zion Police Department responded around 7:24 p.m. Wednesday to the 2000 block of Jethro Avenue in Zion for a call of shots fired. Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old Zion man who had been shot outside, Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner. The man had a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital. The shooting was a “gunfire exchange” between two people, Kehrli said. A juvenile who was fleeing the scene when officers arrived was taken into custody. Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the same block of the shooting and recovered fired evidence and firearms parts. Throughout the investigation, detectives recovered two guns and several shell casings, Kehrli said. The juvenile has not yet been charged with the shooting itself but has been petitioned for charges regarding weapons offenses. Kehrli said the shooting was not random and appears targeted. It is unclear which person initiated the shootout and it remains under active investigation. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Zion Police Department at 847-746-4110.
