A 4-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after he became trapped under a train ride during the Antioch Taste of Summer event Saturday evening.

The Antioch Fire Department responded around 9:05 p.m. Saturday to the carnival at the Antioch Taste of Summer Festival, located in the 900 block of Skidmore Drive in Antioch, for a report of a child trapped under a ride.

Antioch Fire Chief Jon Cokefair told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that firefighters arrived and the 4-year-old boy was already removed from under the train by a bystander.

According to fire radio traffic, the incident occurred at a ride called “Kiddie Train.”

Antioch police officers were already on the scene at the event.

Paramedics evaluated the boy and transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries, Cokefair said.

It is unknown how the boy became trapped under the ride.

The Antioch Taste of Summer Festival is a four-day event that occurred from Thursday to Sunday, according to the Antioch Chamber of Commerce.

The family-fun event features bands, musical light shows, carnival rides, food and sidewalk sales.

Next year’s event will occur from July 13 to July 16, the chamber said.

Rescuers found the body of a missing woman in a pond in front of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Barrington late Monday evening, authorities said.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said deputies were called to the hospital, located at 450 Route 22 in unincorporated Barrington, around 7:15 p.m. Monday.

They were notified about a 61-year-old Lake in the Hills woman who left the hospital.

The woman was being treated in the emergency department and left on foot before she was discharged.

“There were concerns about the person's mental state and sheriff's deputies immediately attempted to locate her,” Covelli said.

Sheriff's deputies were joined by friends and family of the missing woman and a search began.

Lake County Sheriff's Canine Duke led deputies to the retention bond on the south end of the hospital property.

A sheriff's drone was deployed and the drone pilot spotted the woman unresponsive in the water.

Fire personnel were called to the scene around 11:30 p.m. and recovered the woman.

They attempted life-saving measures but she was pronounced deceased, Covelli said.

The Lake Coroner's Office responded and an autopsy is being scheduled.

Covelli said foul play does not appear to be a factor, however, the incident remains under investigation by Lake County Sheriff's Office detectives.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our hearts go out to this individual's loved ones,” a spokesperson for the hospital told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

“Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing further details at this time. We are coordinating with local authorities, and we refer all inquiries to the Lake County Sheriff's Department,” the spokesperson said.

Lewis C. McCracken, 27, of Elgin.

An Elgin man has been charged with attempted murder after two people were shot in Huntley. Police are continuing to search for the suspect, who is also accused in a carjacking.

Lewis C. McCracken, 27, of the 200 block of Villa Street in Elgin, was charged with four counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

The Huntley Police Department responded around 4:18 a.m. Monday to the 11800 block of Cape Cod Lane in Huntley for a report of shots fired.

The Huntley Fire Protection District was also sent to the scene after a report of two people shot.

Officers secured the scene and confirmed the offender, later identified as McCracken, had left prior to their arrival, Deputy Police Chief Linda Hooten said.

Officers provided medical aid to two adult male victims who were later transported by ambulance to area hospitals. Their conditions were not known.

A preliminary investigation showed McCracken drove to the house and approached the front door when gunfire ensued, Hooten said.

The Huntley Police Department said Monday afternoon that residents in the Wing Pointe subdivision should review their doorbell and security cameras from the early morning hours for any footage that could assist in the investigation.

It does not appear to be a random incident and “is specific to this location,” Hooten said.

Police located McCracken’s vehicle but the man fled from the scene.

The Huntley Police Department, McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team, Elgin Police Department and Bartlett Police Department worked to identify McCracken as the shooting suspect.

Hooten said that McCracken may have been involved in a carjacking in Bartlett around 4 p.m. Monday.

The Bartlett Police Department conducted an active investigation searching for him but they were unable to locate McCracken.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the felony charges against McCracken, Huntley police announced late Monday evening.

Warrants were issued for the man, who is not in custody. The warrants carry a $750,000 bond.

Anyone with information on McCracken’s whereabouts is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

A Chicago man was arrested after he allegedly pushed a police officer and hit a security guard in the face during a fight at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee on Saturday.

Kenneth Tabor, 32, of the 4900 block of West Crystal Street in Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, three counts of battery and three counts of resisting a peace officer.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Brooke Wanzenberg said during a bond hearing that the Gurnee Police Department responded Saturday to a report of a fight between patrons at Six Flags Great America.

Tabor allegedly refused to stop fighting and pushed the officer, Wanzenberg said.

A security guard also attempted to break up the fight and Tabor allegedly struck him in the face.

He then allegedly resisted when three police officers tried to arrest him.

Tabor battered another subject in the incident, Wanzenberg said. No one was injured.

Lake County Judge Veronica O’Malley set Tabor’s bond at $20,000 and called his alleged actions “serious.”

Tabor posted bond and was released on Monday, court records show.

He was ordered to not have contact with Six Flags Great America as a condition of his bond.

‘Very hopeful news’: 8-year-old paralyzed in Highland Park shooting sat up and is breathing on his own

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 10:49 AM PDT

Cooper Roberts, 8, was critically injured and remains hospitalized after a gunman opened fire during the Fourth of July parade in downtown Highland Park. | Photo: GoFundMe

The 8-year-old boy who was shot and paralyzed in the Highland Park parade shooting is no longer on a ventilator and took his first ride in a wheelchair over the weekend, his family said.

Cooper Roberts, 8, suffered a gunshot to the abdomen and his spinal cord was severed. He was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago where he remains.

Cooper underwent a procedure early last week which revealed a tear in his esophagus reopened.

Doctors said one of Cooper’s lungs also partially collapsed.

He underwent his seventh surgery to repair the tear in his esophagus last Tuesday, which was successful, according to a family spokesperson.

Cooper woke up on Thursday morning and initial signs were positive. He no longer had a fever and was breathing over the ventilator.

The spokesperson said Cooper’s fever returned later Thursday and a CT scan showed fluid building in his esophagus, lungs and pelvis.

His condition was “very critical” until over the weekend when he began to improve again.

The spokesperson said Cooper is still in the ICU but will hopefully be moved out later this week.

He has been fever-free for 48 hours and is breathing on his own without the ventilator.

He sat up, with assistance, and took a brief first ride in a wheelchair over the weekend.

“Sadly, something he will need to get used to. It was very difficult and emotional for him and his family,” the spokesperson said.

Keely Roberts, who is the superintendent for Zion Elementary School District 6, was attending the Highland Park parade on July 4 with her two twin sons, Cooper and Luke.

Keely and Cooper were both shot when a gunman opened fire during the parade, wounding dozens of people and killing seven.

Over $1.5 million has been raised in a GoFundMe account for the Roberts family.

Keely Roberts was seriously injured but is recovering.

Tony Loizzi, a friend and colleague of Keely Roberts, said Luke is recovering at home with his sisters.

Keely underwent several surgeries after she suffered gunshot wounds to her leg and foot area. She was later discharged from the hospital.

Active and retired superintendents across the state have reached out to the Zion school district to help while the family recovers, Loizzi said.

Loizzi said Keely "works hard day and night" for her school district.

Police previously said that Robert E. Crimo III, 21, of Highwood, was responsible for the July 4 shooting.

He was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said.

Many additional charges will be filed against Crimo, Rinehart said.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that Crimo pre-planned the attack for several weeks.

Crimo allegedly brought a high-powered rifle to the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.

Covelli said that Crimo used a fire escape ladder to access the roof of a building on the parade route.

Crimo then allegedly opened fire on parade-goers, killing seven people and injuring over 45 people. Over 80 rounds were fired from the rifle.

Crimo, who was dressed as a woman, exited the roof, dropped the rifle and escaped with the fleeing crowd, according to Covelli.

Crimo walked to his mother's Highland Park home, which is nearby the parade route, and borrowed her silver 2010 Honda Fit, Covelli said.

A person spotted the wanted Honda Fit as it traveled southbound on Route 41 in North Chicago around 6:30 p.m. July 4 as an intense manhunt was underway.

The person called 911 and a North Chicago police officer who was sitting at Route 41 and Buckley Road in North Chicago spotted Crimo drive past in the vehicle, Covelli and Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said.

A short pursuit ensued and it came to an end at Route 41 and Westleigh Road in Lake Forest.

Officers arrested Crimo and located a second rifle in his vehicle. The two rifles along with three other guns seized were legally purchased by Crimo himself.

He remains held in the Lake County Jail after Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered him held without bond.

Crimo is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 28.

Man out on bond for threatening to shoot up Waukegan social security office refused to turn over his guns, prosecutor says

Posted: 18 Jul 2022 08:59 AM PDT

Juan A. Diaz Jr., 50, of Round Lake.

A Round Lake man out on bond for threatening to commit a shooting at the Waukegan social security office refused to turn over his guns after state police revoked his FOID card last week, prosecutors said.

Juan A. Diaz Jr., 50, of the 200 block of West Treehouse Lane in Round Lake, was charged with one count of harassment through electronic communications, a Class 4 felony.

Diaz made a claim for social security benefits, which was denied, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lindsay Hicks said during a bond hearing.

Diaz, upset with the denial, called the social security case manager and stated, “I’m going to come down there and shoot them all like the mass shooting that just happened,” Hicks said.

Round Lake police officers responded to Diaz’s residence and asked him if he had any weapons.

Diaz indicated “he was not going to give them up.” Diaz did have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, Hicks said.

The incident occurred on July 6 and Diaz was later arrested by the Waukegan Police Department, court records show.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Diaz’s bond at $100,000, which he posted $10,000 cash and was released from custody.

Potkonjak ordered him to not have any contact with the social security office, located at 1930 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, and with Congressman Brad Schneider’s office. It was not clear what incident occurred with Schneider’s office.

Potkonjak also ordered Diaz to surrender his FOID card and all his firearms as a condition of his bond.

During a Friday court hearing after Diaz had been released from jail, Assistant State’s Attorney Melinda Lange said that a “Clear and Present Danger” form had been submitted to the Illinois State Police.

The state police have since revoked the man’s Firearm Owner’s Identification card following the report.

Lange said officers went back to Diaz’s home to take his guns, as part of his bond conditions, but the man told officers to “f–k themselves.”

Lange asked Potkonjak to again order Diaz to surrender all of his guns by 5 p.m. that day.

Diaz’s attorney confirmed his client had not surrendered his handgun, rifle and two shotguns and still had them in his possession.

It was not immediately known if Diaz surrendered his guns to officers as planned later that day following the court hearing.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 3.
