No injuries after fire destroys building at mulch supplier in North Chicago

Authorities are continuing to investigate a fire that caused an unoccupied building to be fully engulfed in flames at a mulch supplier in North Chicago Saturday evening.

The North Chicago Fire Department and North Chicago Police Department responded around 7:20 p.m. Saturday to the area of Bittersweet Avenue west of Route 41 in North Chicago for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and reported a single-story building at The Mulch Center, 12660 Bittersweet Avenue, was fully engulfed in flames, according to fire radio traffic.

There were no other structures immediately nearby and the fire completely destroyed the building.

North Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Herrera told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the structure was newly built and unoccupied at the time.

No injuries were reported and it is unclear yet what caused the fire.

The investigation is ongoing, Herrera added.

1 motorcyclist now stabilized, other released from hospital after crash in Algonquin

Police say a motorcyclist’s condition has stabilized after being flown to the hospital and another motorcyclist was released after the two crashed and were ejected in Algonquin Saturday afternoon.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 4:06 p.m. Saturday to Route 31 south of North Main Street.

Algonquin Police Department Detective Sergeant Robert Salazar said officers received a call of a traffic collision involving motorcycles.

A preliminary investigation showed that two motorcycles were traveling southbound on Route 31 south of North Main Street.

One of the motorcycles lost control, ejecting the operator. The second motorcycle then lost control, ejecting that operator as well, Salazar said.

No other vehicles appear to have been involved in the incident.

Salazar initially said both drivers were transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

The first driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by a LifeNet helicopter.

Salazar said in an update Sunday afternoon that the first driver’s condition has stabilized.

The second driver has been released from the hospital.

The southbound lanes of Route 31 were closed for approximately four hours during the investigation.

The Kane County Crash Assistance Response Team is assisting the Algonquin Police Department with the investigation.
