4 years in prison for man who battered family members at Crystal Lake home

Michael Blaney, 34, of Crystal Lake

A 34-year-old man, who has numerous prior convictions for domestic battery, was sentenced to four years in prison after he battered two family members at a Crystal Lake home in January 2021, court documents show.

Michael Blaney, 34, of the 0-100 block of Dartmoor Drive in Crystal Lake, pleaded guilty to one count of domestic battery with prior convictions, a Class 2 felony.

In January 2021, Blaney allegedly held a family member against a wall with his hand to her neck, strangling her and causing injury, a criminal complaint said.

Blaney, who had at least four previous convictions for domestic battery at the time, pushed that family member to the ground, the complaint added.

He also allegedly pushed another family member to the ground and struck her in the face.

The Crystal Lake Police Department arrested Blaney at the scene.

He was charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery and four counts of domestic battery.

McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge set Blaney’s bond at $150,000 at the time. He was ordered to surrender all his firearms as a permanent condition of his bond.

Prosecutors negotiated a plea deal with Blaney.

He pleaded guilty to one count of domestic battery with prior convictions in exchange for all other charges to be dismissed.

Coppedge sentenced Blaney on Thursday to four years in prison.

His sentence will run consecutively to another four-year sentence he received in a Kane County conviction.

He will receive credit for serving 532 days in jail and he must pay $2,003 in court fines and fees.
