Hey again! I’ve really been digging into watching movies filmed in Chicago lately — can anyone else relate? I think it’s because I love exploring the city, but when it’s cold and rainy I’d rather be sitting on my couch with a bowl of popcorn. So far, While You Were Sleeping has to be my favorite rom-com filmed here. (If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s streaming on Disney+ for some reason.)
While we all stare out the window daydreaming of summer festivals (as their lineups keep getting announced), here are some events brightening the rainy season.
First and foremost, Vocalo’s Chi Sounds Like Showcase is in less than two weeks! Take a break from your weekly routine and get familiar with Chicago artists Brittney Carter, Oliv Blu, WemmyMo and Ausar as they take the stage at Subterranean on April 13 for an event hosted and curated by Bekoe. Plus, enjoy the sweet sounds of Vocalo’s brand new on-air host Nudia Hernandez DJing throughout the night. Tickets are still available online — come hang out with us!
And speaking of Nudia, she’s about to complete her first full week on-air as a Vocalo host! Make sure to tune in to 91.1 FM every weekday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to catch her signature mix of hip-hop, R&B, dance music and so much more. If you love what she’s spinning as much as we do, tag @vocalo and @nudiaonair on Instagram and Twitter to let us know!
Tonight is the premiere of the critically-acclaimed play What To Send Up When It Goes Down, written by Aleshea B. Harris and co-directed by Ericka Ratcliff and Daniel Bryant. Jointly presented by GRAY, Congo Square Theatre Company and Theaster Gates’ Rebuild Foundation, What To Send Up When It Goes Down is described as a “play-pageant-ritual-homegoing celebration,” a participatory, cathartic artistic experience in response to increased racialized violence against the Black community. The 90-minute production opens tonight at GRAY Chicago, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online.
Turkish psych folk-funk band Altin Gün is headed to Thalia Hall this weekend in support of their latest album Yol, with support from reggae-influenced artist Pachyman. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, you’re in luck! We’re giving away four pairs of tickets to check them out. Enter now via our Instagram post, and if you win we’ll let you know on Monday, April 4.
Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist Brandon Breaux’s first U.S. solo exhibition “BIG WORDS” opens April 9 at Bronzeville gallery Blanc. Curated by Anna Cerniglia and Alison Cuddy, the exhibition explores identity and personal history through mediums like paintings, installations and a digital NFT. Online RSVP is required for entry to the opening, but the exhibition will be on display through May 27.
